Having stayed at The Old School House previously we had no doubt this one would be a winner too. Wish we could take the cottage home with us (with dogs), but we don’t have the surroundings to do it justice. Thanks for having us (again!). Brian and Dinky, ex Hout Bay.
Hello Bronwyn, Thank you, and your family, for a super, peaceful stay. What a fabulously tranquil place this is, – loved it, loved the dogs, loved the lack of TV and cell phones. And, reeled in the ‘library’. Now, alas, it’s back to reality and “civilization”. Hope to return one day. Meanwhile, enjoy every moment of your life in the idyllic place. Kind regards, Barbara.
View from our cottage was breathtaking. Cottage is 5 star – stunning! Sitting down on the private deck is so peaceful, you forget all your troubles. thanks for a rejuvenating break from everyday life. Overall: 100% Brenda.
Hi Bronwyn, Thank you again for the very happy stay in your lovely cottage. With best wishes to you and your family. Wendy.
Dear Bronwyn, Thanks again, had such a relaxing weekend, beautiful spot you have! Kind Regards, Emma. Plettenberg Bay.
Awesome time, thanks guys, beautiful spot, great for kids, enjoyed the runs and walks, canoe and river. Plant a vineyard! Peter, Karen, Thomas and Olivia. Enjoy the wine.
Once again this beautiful spot in nature has lifted our spirits and reinforced our decision for our future. Thank you once again for sharing your land with us and for the friendship and advice. As Arnie would say “We’ll be back”. Carlos and Sam, Cape Town. PS. Cafe Wonderful awaits.
General Standard of Facilities: 5 star; Appeal of setting: 5 star; Professionalism and hospitality: 5 star; Value for money: 5 star; Overall rating: 5 star. Comments: The Old School House ticks just about every box for a great family getaway (except, of course, if you need to be in constant cell phone contact…)The building dates from 1911 and effort has been put into retaining the character and history of this old school. Yet, we wanted for nothing in terms of comfort – the wood burning stove in the lounge warmed the house on the one cold evening, and the beds even have electric blankets. On another night, we sat outside, marveling at the starry sky. The friendly farm dogs and cat provided much entertainment and Jock even joined us on short walk up the mountain. The nearby river has a well-built jetty with canoes and paddle skis, and this shaded area would be great for a picnic! Hanlie and family, Cape Town.
A perfect spot! Pity it was so short. Attention to detail – 10/10. Amazing views. Thank you. Mems and Martin, Somerset West.
What a luxuriously, stylishly rust Karoo jewel. The attention to detail in doctor and equipment makes the stay here absolutely perfect. The setting of course is a dream. Beauty and tranquility surrounded by nature unspoiled and so welcoming. An absolute tonic and real blessing for body, spirit and mind. Can’t wait to plan another much longer stay here. Adore the two dogs – especially Jessie and enjoyed the visit by the curious black cat. Much love and blessings to you and your family. Michelle and Trevor, Fish Hoek, Cape Town.
We absolutely loved our stay at the River View Cottages. The peace and quiet that surrounded our cottage was just what we needed! It was amazing to be filled with wonder at how vast and huge the mountains around us are and how tiny we are in comparison. Our little cottage had everything we needed and we loved our walks around the farm and trips up the river. The dog’s visit while we were eating supper on the patio was a highlight. We hope to be back! Ian and Tammy, Cape Town.
Karoo goes upmarket! What a superb cottage and views!!! No words can describe waking up in the morning and seeing the mountains! Beats the sea anyway. We felt so at home, being greeted by happy dogs and of course for me a cat lover, a very talkative black cat – I renamed him ‘Purrer’. Never seen a cat enjoy a ride on a quad bike but him mom came to fetch him and off they went! In the morning the dogs could not wait for us to take them on a walk! They even showed us the way and for vacuum cleaners around the braai. They were the best! Ruth and Franco, Knysna/Italy. PS. Best of all no cell phone connection!!! Peace and quiet – you could hear the birds talk to one another!
This is day 5 of being married!! We absolutely love this place, more than we imagined and want to come back. We are sad to leave for our next adventure on our road trip, but our one night stay will be remembered! Your two beautiful and friendly dogs were our guides during our early morning walk. They are adorable and so well mannered! We want their puppies to take home! We named the one ‘Whitey’ and the other ‘Blacky’. Thank you Lumb family, this was special…see you soon… Much love, Rupert and Merylle, Paarl.
Hi Bronwyn, We had a really lovely time at the River View Cottages this week – wish we had stayed an extra day. Thought you might like to see a couple of photos of the fish Tony caught – he thinks about 100 altogether. They were all returned safely to the river. Kind regards, Barbara
Thank you for a wonderful time at the Old School House! We really enjoyed our restful family time in your valley. The cottage is beautiful and I love how you have preserved so many old items and also the feel of the cottage, whilst providing everything needed for a lovely holiday. Our son’s ‘best’ was the trip with his mom on the river and our daughters’“best” was definitely Jock. I suspect they would have loaded him in the car if they could!
Hanlie, The Old School House, April 2014.
Hi to all who live about 2.5 – 3 hours away from this fantastic place. We went away this past weekend to the most delightful (basic, but upmarket!) cottages in the middle of the Klein Karoo, and had the most superb weekend away. We were two couples, but there are 3 cottages, so if 6 of you wanted to go, it would be ideal, as you each have your privacy, but are still all together. The walks were great, accompanied by the resident dogs who led the way. These cottages are 7km inland off the R62 between Calitzdorp and Ladismith, in an area called Matjiesvlei and are affordable.
Ruth, River View Cottages, April 2014
|Our stay at River View Cottages was simply amazing. Cottages are very comfortable with stunning views of the River. Bronwyn was very nice and nothing was too much trouble. The walks around the area are very nice but you must go early to avoid the midday sun. The highlight of our stay was swimming in the river which is located just minutes from the cottages. Here you can swim or take the boat up the river and enjoy the beautiful birds and fantastic scenery. Come well equipped because the nearest shop that you can rely on is in Oudtshoorn.|
Enjoyed our overnight stay. Beautiful, tranquil spot, reminding us of what a truly magnificent country we have! Keith and Moira, Edgemead, Cape Town.
Wow – 1st few pages – I know them well. Ian, Dave and Dot, Kevin. Ian told us about the River View Cottages. Tonight we can hear the jackals calling. This afternoon baboons. In between Jock, Bishop and Jess. They have been everywhere with us. Jock even came along for a paddle with the other two following up and down the river. When we hit the shallows, up river they all wanted to pile in! Early morning walk (6h30/7h00) over the cliffs. Again with all three dogs. The daisies scattered with their approach. Heard the Fish Eagle a few times, didn’t see them – but makes us feel at home back in Gonubie, East London. Colin, you and your boys with the tractor, ploughing and bike rides – what a wonderful time you’re having. Bronwyn, thank you for a wonderful stay. Keith and Leigh, East London.
We are very sad to leave this beautiful place, but thankful for a wonder weekend! The cottage are perfect, we had everything we needed. The views, river, bird fife – we also saw a Klipspringer and heard baboons at the river – were amazing, too. Thank you so much for making it possible for city folk to share this peaceful place. We are recharged and well rested. We hope to be back soon! Thank you Bronwyn. Jolene and Ricus, Muizenberg, Cape Town.
Just want to say a BIG thank you for an unforgettable few days spent at your cottage. Your attention to detail was appreciated and we will definitely be back soon. Thanks. Grant.
Unfortunately our reflections can only be short and mostly around the theme, “Why did we get two of your annual three rainy days?” Nevertheless, we used the canoe and your fishing gear (of course the 3m long marlin could free himself before we could photograph – or fry – it). Willy threw most of your stones into the river and the little one polished enthusiastically your hardwood floors. We felt well guarded at all times – even at night and in the DARK hours, Jock was always there. But of course Willy did share his stale bread with him before we could say “No!”. So we had our short stay here – what a beautiful house (may IKEA never invade) and wonderful place between the river and the mountains. If we can come back – it will definitely be for longer! Thank you very much – also for the many extras. Otto, Willy, Christina and Tom, Dresden, Germany.
Beautiful, peaceful, tranquil stop over, loved the river spot and canoe – slept ten hours non-stop – wow, needed it after leaving my two girls behind in Cape Town. Thank you. Brenda and Ivan.
Beautiful and tranquil, a way to heaven. The most beautiful rainbow over the Karoo. Thank you for the time to be here. Danke schon! Ingrid, Gitta and Heide, Deutschland/Wilderness.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us. We particularly enjoyed Jock and his care of us. Dave and Dot, East London.
Rarely one place on this planet has inspired ourselves like this one, and brought us back to ourselves like this one. The night in the hammock under the full moon was unique. Thank you Bronwyn and Colin for this special place, and thanks to ‘Schoner Wohnen’. We will be back, Ecki and Axel, Hamburg.
Just some pics of your beautiful getaway. Looking forward to visiting in April and catching up.
We are back in Europe and still dream about the wonderful days at your farm. We have really enjoyed staying at your fantastic and very special place and looking forward to come again. All the best … and give a hug to Little Jock
Ecki ind Axel, River View Cottages, February 2014.
Good day Bronwyn, Thanks once again for giving us the opportunity to share some of your peace of heaven. Kind regards, Herby, Magoebaskloof.
Hi Bronwyn, Thank you so much. Your farm is precious. We had a lovely time. Warm regards,
Thank you so much for your hospitality. We loved our stay. You have put so much detail into everything. We will hopefully see you again. Gerhard.
A lovely quiet stop, peaceful and perfect. Caroline, Roger and Wendy.
This is a wonderful place you’ve got here! Never want to leave it and will always treasure it! The hospitality is outstanding! The guard dogs are friendly and well mannered! We will never forget this beautiful place and we are grateful to have been here to experience these amazing mountains. The Lamprechts.
Baie dankie vir die pragtige dag! No internet, no phone, no TV. Silence the whole day and only the sound of nature. Beautiful scenery. We loved it! Tiny and Piet.
Our new favourite place! Wow, so incredible. We had the best time. Loved swimming in the river, canoeing, hearing the happy sounds of the kids swimming, birdwatching, chilling, and our sweet little friend, Jock. Almost took him home with us Thank you!!! Neels and Kath.
Lovely long lazy day etched indelibly in our memory. Tx. Keith and Cheryl.
After a year away from SA and grueling city life, this little pocket of near-isolation was jet what we needed! Swam with gusto, which I hadn’t done since I was a kid. Loved the dogs, especially Jessie, who’s perfected the dramatic head-toss! Took Jock for a quick ride in the kayak which he loved. Our last evening here, and surprised by the most amazing sunset yet – Bronwyn, expect some pictures via email from us! Natalia and Mat. PS. Wonderful book selection – how clever to keep those little books by the bed! Read the Capote, Nin, and the Steversen!
Thank you. Lovely and inspiring to meet you and your wonderful habitat. Too short, too short. So little time to just be. But so glad we made it and we will long to come back. This place does affect one in the most curious and extraordinary way. Hope to see you again in the not too distant future and good luck with your endeavors. Zaza and Gabriel. PS. Love the Cliff’s Edge Walk!
After two nights, and having to move on…..how can we leave this lovely place. Not one single worry, just beauty and birds and all that we need was just here. Thank you for making this lovely place. Jackie.
Bronwyn and Colin are special people with deep insight into the spirituality of nature. Their attention to detail while keeping all ‘simple’ makes the River View Cottages particularly special. Jock is their extraordinary ambassador, gate-keeper, and tour leader. One can ‘commune’ with Jock. My walks with him were extraordinary for the mutual understanding that we developed. And his ‘show-off’ technique of ballet dancing with his hind legs – adorable! Absorbing nature’s energy through it’s quiet simplicity restores the soul and teaches one the value of just ‘being’. Thank you Bronwyn and Colin for creating such a magical place! Ken.
The River View Cottages are truly a place of beauty – deep beauty which gives rise to reflection and love. Love of our country – it’s diversity and all it’s spacious spaces. Today, our Grand-daughter, Amy (7), had her penultimate Chemo Lumber Puncture and being here allows for so much hoe and abundant healing energy to flow in the breeze and down the river. Like so man other travelers I too, hope to revisit this lovely valley again an stay long enough to really still my mind and feed my soul. Thank you – Wendi.
Our stay was short, weather was raining, left Cape Town at 15h30 arrived here at 20h30. What a lovely, tranquil and majestic stay. We are off on our travels Route 62, I would love to come stay again and explore this beauty that surrounds us! Jason and Janine, Flamingovlei.
Lost track of time here! What a wonderful way to end our holiday! Hope to be back soon. Dirk and Bireit.
Dear Bronwyn and Colin, Thank you for the friendliness and hospitality, your place is 5 star. May God bless you and your family in 2014 – Kind regards, Bozena and John, Johannesburg.
What an amazing place!! We absolutely loved loved loved it. Have a blessed and beautiful year! Thank you! Keagan and Jill, Cape Town.
Hi, I just want to say thank you for your hospitality. Hope all is in order and you really have a very nice place. I am glad I stayed there and I walked to the river this morning and you were right, should have stayed longer. But alas time is not on my side. Apologies for coming home so late last night. Regards, Kirk.
What a nice little spot, out of the way and so relaxing. The swim in the River was great, and the cottages are well equipped and very comfortable. Definitely a spot to stay.
Hi Colin, Bronwyn & boys, Just a note of thanks for allowing us to share in your piece of heaven on
earth! Coming back to Fish Hoek, traffic, wind & crazy drivers, cemented our
decision to move to the country ourselves. End of Jan 2014 we’ll be moving
to Stanford 20km outside of Hermanus…yippee!! Have a super Christmas and a blessed 2014.
Just added a few pics of other guests enjoying the pure tranquillity of
“our” cottage front garden. Take care, John & Mandy, Fish Hoek.
Magical serene and full of surprises. The Old School House is an oasis in this creature filled place. Thanks to the two little bats hat flew around our room last night. And to all the birds and spiders that fascinated my son. We’re already plotting our next visit. Candice, Dallas and Tao, Cape Town.
Thank you! I had a great time! Give a bone to Jock for me! Isobella, Cape Town
Dear Bronwyn, Colin, Cole and Berkeley, What a great joy our time here has been. We an’t believe it flew by so fast. We loved The Old School House, the walks, Bishop, Jessie and Jock, the swims, the canoeing and dumping off the jetty. And then there was the playing and laughter – Christopher really came to life and loved his time with the boys. What more could one want? Thank you for sharing these jewels with us. Anne, Jaco and Christopher.
We three thoroughly enjoyed our brief stay at Matjiesvlei. You have it all – mountains, river, fishing, canoeing, swimming and magnificent vistas. We shall be back to see your aloes blooming! Many thanks. Peter and Claire, Pam, Port Alfred, Eastern Cape.
It was our second time in the valley – first time at the River View Cottages – and in spite of all the motorcycle troubles and a few trips up and down we ha a wonderful stay – loved the heat, the view, the river, the swims, the walk, the quiet and the stars. I also loved the book selection and almost finished ‘A bend in the River’ – appropriately. Many thanks for sharing your place and for your helpfulness. Jonathan and Bettina.
Karoo Christmas Carol: O Matjiesvlei, O Matjiesvlei, How beautiful your valley. Oh Matjiesvlei, Oh Matjiesvlei, How beautiful your valley. The gentle river flowing free, Matjiesvlei mountains for all to see. Oh Matjiesvlei, Oh Matjiesvlei, How beautiful your valley. Sheila.
A wonderful retreat at any time, but surely most from the madness of Knysna at Christmas. Our third visit to the cottages and umpteenth to the valley. This time be baked. But still we got in plenty of walking. Nice to meet up with Pieter again (farm manager on the other side of the river). Birdlife is fabulous here. A pale-chanting goshawk almost flew into our verandah and at this time of the year the Diederick Cuckoo is very active (and being chased by weavers, doubtless cautious of tis parasitism). We remain in love with the views from these cottages – we hope to be back in the Autumn. Mike and Sheila, Knysna.
What an awesome place! Had two nice days in the company of Jock the Jack-Russel and the two greyhounds. Where did you hide the fish? Hennie. Thank you for everything. We just love this place. We’ll be back soon. We adore the dogs, we had anise 5km walk with all three of them, it feels like home to us! Greetings, Cindy. Pretoria.
Enjoyed a wonderful stay as part of our family road trip. What a lovely place to start off! The houses are pretty. Would love to come in Winter to light the fireplace. The Steunenbergs,
After a long drive, what a surprise! A good swim with a private jetty. Breathtaking view. We will come back. The Tellers, Johannesburg.
What a magnificent view, and what a beautiful place to stay in. We loved every moment of it, every visit from your dogs, every sim in the river, and walk along the cliffs. Thank you for creating such a tranquil spot to be refreshed and unwind. This will always be especial memory for us, and we will definitely be back. The Jacobs.
Dear Bronwyn and Colin, This getaway has been magical and everything and more than we could’ve imagined. The cottage is cosy and welcoming and the views have mesmerized us completely. The river has become a favourite spot for us and we thoroughly enjoyed exploring it and discovering its beauty. This place is a piece of heaven and the silence is delightful. So many kisses for all of your beautiful and warm dogs. They were lovely to greet every morning and sit with us in the evenings. This place has made us happier people. Many thanks, Jan and Sam.
Monday, late morning. We discovered the wonderful river. We swam in its gentle waters and explored until meeting a lively waterfall. A thunder storm approaches. Silent and slow does the deep river flow on its smooth glossy surface, reflecting the sky.
God’s love is so evident in all around us; the mountains, the view, the birds, the dogs, the sweet and savory smell of bushes and life around us depicting the diversity of God’s creation. We have enjoyed the peace and solitude of the cottage – We would like to spend more time here, perhaps next time. Thank you for providing all this for our enjoyment. We appreciate you. Blessings. Keith and Pam, Plettenberg Bay. PS. Dear Bronwyn, You were so sweet. See you again. Keith.
Bear and Giraffe’s Holiday in the Little Karoo: It was a very hot Summer’s day and Bear and Giraffe decided to go on holiday. Bear was tired of thinking. He had thought and thought and thought everyday for a very long time. Now he was tired of it. Giraffe was tired too. While Bear had been thinking, she had been walking round and round, and now her long legs ere tired and wobbly. But where to go? “I just want to go somewhere where I can look very, very far away, because then I don’t have to think about anything at all”, said Bear. Giraffe thought that was a very good idea, so they started walking. Giraffe made her neck even longer, so she could look out for such a place. The walked and walked and walked, but it was not an easy place to find. Almost everywhere there was something standing in the way. Trees, rocks, and even other animals. Then, when the sun was already going down, Giraffe twitched her ears and looked through her eyelashes. “Bear, I think we’re almost there”, she said. And she was right, because they had found a nice little house to sleep in and a river and mountains to look at. They both made a little funny jump. Then Bear made a fire and Giraffe cooled her legs in the river. When that was done, they snuggled up to each other. And while the birds were singing, they looked very, very far away. Diederik and Anna, the Netherlands.
Well, we’ve been here for two days. We expected to enjoy ourselves, but we return having ticked many more boxes than we ever imagined. Spectacular birdlife, unspoiled environment – a night sky to rival the best anywhere. We love having had Jock to be with us – what a gentlemen. Your cottages are comfortable and friendly and the river is so usably close. We also discovered that Calitzdorp and environs has much to offer. We picked great apricots, listened to a lovely organ recital, bought wonderful wine – fully sampled – and met warm and friendly people on our unplanned excursion that took in such interesting scenery – 3 biomes that met wow! So many reasons to come back – and we have to make time to hike. Dave, Plettenberg Bay.
Hi Bronwyn, Julie and I wish to express our thanks for three very enjoyable days at the River View Cottages. We found everything just to our liking. The cottage was just right and the furnishings and utensil list quite comprehensive, but without clutter. We believe you have positioned it in the sweet spot. The location of the cottages is superb and we really enjoyed the view. As “dogless” dog lovers we rather enjoyed having your three pooches around too, particularly Jock. It was good meeting you and your family. We would like to return some day. Kind regards and best wishes, Peter and Julie.
What a unique experience to be walking down a farm road in the Karoo: pouring rain, kids with hands full of mulberries after a successful frog catching expedition!! Thank you for sharing this magic little slice of South Africa with us. See you soon. Stuart, Shelley, Ally and Josh, St. James, Cape Town. Hi Colin, great place, sweet accommodation, but above all, gotta dig your style bro! Ken and Cherie, Port Alfred.
A charming place. A second visit would be very rewarding. Unfortunately we had time for one night only. Rolf, Catherine and Katja.
A magnificent spot to spend some quality family time together and a great choice for our sweet old son’s first road trip! Mark, Taryn, Ariella and Cameron.
A large tortoise to greet us. Three dogs to keep an eye on us. Lovely views to see. Overcast days to keep us cool. A surprise – a goliath heron to say goodbye. And so much more! Pete and Jolie, Knysna.
This will remain as our fondest memory of going away! Thank you both Colin and Bronwyn for your friendly hospitality and care taken to create this lovely place. The creator made the view and what a view! You guys are amazing. We’ll certainly come back. Chris and Lourieke.
What an amazing stay in a house so tastefully prepared with all we needed!! Loved it, coming back for more. Here’s my try at putting into words ow this stay made me feel: “In klipstilte kraal my droe hart oop, Vervaag stadsmasjien se dreun in Piet-my-vrou en paddakeer se deun.” The frogs inspired the following: Wie se beurt: Ek, Ek, Ekke, Ekke, Ek, Wie? Wie? Ekke, ekke, Ek Ek. Lourieke.
The purple headed mountain, the river running by, the bright sky in the morning that lightens up the sky – God’s marvelous creation. This special place, where time stands still and may only be measured not by days but by what happens! A tortoise with a cross on his back, a shower of rain, a picking of apricots, the oleander in full blossom (reminding me of my childhood in Durban of vases filled with them, of a holiday in Crete). A wonderful place to keep in my heart. Thank you. Anne, Plettenberg Bay.
Sometimes in our busy Human Rush between Here and There, we fail to see, sense and feel God’s beauty. If one can only stop and let God and Nature into our souls, we will realize that this beautiful spot is just such a place that many of us crave yet fail to see. As crazy as it sounds, we believe that little Jock is part of the magic of this special place. It is easier too, if you can imagine that Jock has come here for a reason. Perhaps this little fellow was once a person that loved this place so much that God permitted him to come and share his love and knowledge with us. We pray that God will continue to bless this wondrous place and especially when Jock’s work is done here, that God will say “Well done Jock. Please come up to Our Home and take a rest.” Bill and Virginia, Montana, USA.
The beauty of the area surpassed our expectations! Found several snails, loved swimming in the river, saw lots of flowers on hiking trails and enjoyed the company of the dogs. Kevin and Mary, East London.
Colin en Bronwyn, Wat ‘n pragtige plek! Baie dankie dat julle mense toelaat ons hier to kuier. Ons kan sien aan hoe julle alles dan dat julle speciale mense is. Ons kom DV weer. Francois and Ludwig
This is the most beautiful valley in the world! Philip and Julia
After approximately 4 000km going nowhere slowly through SA we are returning to Cape Town rejuvenated. This last outpost of paradise has been the cherry on the top. Thank you, Colin and Bronwyn and the boys for being the custodians. may you and all visitors be richly blessed. Jock is a true friend! Lynette and Gunther.
My time spent here was measured in happiness. How can one not be touched by the abundance of nature! I loved the…aloes, aloes, aloes and aloes (always have), the variation in geology, the plants and the companionship of the dogs, Steerings se Kloof and the Cliff’s Edge walks. I’ll miss that exuberant greeting too! Sandra
Wow, wow, wow! What an amazing stay. We will DEFINITELY be coming back, one night isn’t long enough! A perfect place to reconnect with yourself and nature. The abundance of magic in the sights, sounds, smells and feeling cannot be described in words. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Maruschka and Stephen.
Thank you for a lovely stay at this beautiful spot! We loved everything about The Old School House including three amazing dogs – they went walking with us and only left us for the right to be back the next morning. Astrid and Joe, Dinky and Brian, Hout Bay.
So, there were these three Swiss guys that left their wives in the hands of a German painter in Cape Town. And wanted to climb Colin’s Peak (formerly known as Osberg) with Colin. Soon the old Swiss guy gave up and two Swiss and Colin continued, leaving the old Swiss guy to wonder when (if?) the other three would make it to the top and, more importantly, would make it back down……….Telephone to Bronwyn: they made it to the top at 11h30, ie. having left at 5am, – in six and a half hours! Bronwyn, Cole, Berkeley and Pim heard some Swiss yodeling at 3pm but didn’t see any figures. 4pm – They are back! Apparently, they were already at 9h45 at the top, i.e. roughly 5 hours! Colin, Bronwyn (and Cole and Berkeley), it was just perfect to be back at Matjiesvlei, a little paradise, with the wonderful family Lumb. I love you all, and I’ll be back soon to show my Annemarie your Matjiesvlei paradise. Pim (with Walter and Hubert).
What a treat. So peaceful! Wish the whole country could be like this. Thanks so much. Keep up the good work. You have the best behaved dogs. Just loved them. Peter and Joan, Plettenberg.
Extremes of heat and rain over the last 3 days – interesting to experience the different moods of the wonderful spot. Really looking forward to being neighbors next year at Gamka Eco Estate. Ian (and Margie in absentia!).
Maruschka and Stephen, Prince Albert.
What a gem! We had a lovely stay – very clean, very comfortable and very relaxing. Evenings spent around the braai fire, talking about nothing, while starring at the millions of stars was the best. We are already talking of returning for more! The Bothas, Evans’s and Huddys.
Dear Bronwyn and Colin, Some wise shot said, “Live simple, eat well and say no to nonsense!” We indulged in “simple luxury”; we ate well – with great Calitzdorp wines on the side; and there was just no nonsense! May God spoil many people this way! Andre and Ilse, Ballito Bay.
Hi Bronwyn and Colin, Hope you are both well in your bit of paradise. I informed Trevor Hardaker of the two interesting bird sightings I had on your farm. He was most excited and has posted the info on his news letter as you can see. It will be interesting to see if this results in an influx of mad birders to River View Cottages. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay on your farm and would love to make a return trip some time in the future. All the very best.
This is the Southern African Rare Bird News Report issued at 20h00 on Thursday, 01 August 2013.
….Then, on to some news and, starting in the Western Cape, some interesting sightings have been received from the Calitzdorp region where a group of between 12 and 20 WHITE-FRONTED BEE-EATERS have been found to be breeding there! Although this species is known from previous records in the province, I cannot find any reference to breeding in the province before. They were seen on a farm along the Gamka River near the town (details of the farm at wwwriverviewcottages.co.za) during the course of last week and, according to the farmer, have been present there for quite some time already! Also of interest, over the course of 2 days, the same farm produced 2 sightings of COMMON SCIMITARBILL. The bird(s) was calling actively during both sightings. The sightings may well refer to the same individual as they were only about 600m apart, but this is an incredibly rare bird in the province, so a great record indeed.Kind regards, TREVOR HARDAKER, Cape Town, South Africa
Hallo Bronwyn, Thank you for a place we really enjoyed and had time to recuperate, we really love your place. I was able to reconnect with my childhood and as this year is my year to find inner joy and to become whole again the stay at your place was truly a place of sanctuary for me. I am already planning to bring my two sons 5 and 8 to come experience the farm, there are very few places where one can stay to really experience “farm”.Thank you,

As said by Oslo: “And when you see this whole existence as a tremendous dance, a celebration, you are liberated by it. It is a celebration that liberates, it is love that liberates, it is beauty that liberates – it is not metaphysics or philosophy” – Here it comes Naturally! Thank you. Alwyn.
Found ‘Heaven and Earth’ and even a feather! Merci beaucoup. Natalie and Alwyn
Unbelievable! Did not have much time to go on walks. I decided to put my Landy on it’s side Sunday evening. Could not see what situations was in the dark, so sate tight until morning. Farmer took me to River View Cottages. Colin spent most of his day helping to tow Landy back onto road. Took me into town for supplies. Colin, Bronwyn and youngsters were amazing. You have restored my faith in humanity. I will definitely be back to finish hat I did not have time to do this trip. Dave.
Back again. Landy in Oudtshoorn. Waiting for quote. Will see what happens. Tx Bronwyn for keeping my ‘spot’ open. Dave.
When you can’t walk on water, take the boat. Easy come, easy go. Thanks for this wonderful place, where we have time for feelings and when needed, put them in order. I know this is a kind place and I hope to one day return my kindness. Hope to meet your dogs in the morning. Love, Me.
Dit was die eerste van nog baie kere! Julle het ‘n wonderlike plek, dankie vir die lafenis! Dis net wat die siel nodig gehad het. van, Sandra
Thank you for the most delightful stay, we were just absolutely comfortable, entranced with our surroundings, thoroughly enjoyed our walk and spending time capturing and enjoying the birds (or trying to get good photos!). Meeting you and your family (including the dogs!) was also a delight. We will be back, thank you, thank you! Fritz and Margie – not ready to leave!
Thank you for a lovely stay – we had everything we needed, surrounded by beauty, peace and tranquility. Pity I was not well and spent yesterday in bed – but what a lovely place to recuperate. I will be back to enjoy the walks. Cheryl and Mike.
All our lives we’ve searched for ‘Walden’ – a place of simplicity and soul. You have recognized and created it. A perfect harmony of nature and ‘isithunzi’ – Xhosa for Spirit, Presence and Respect. Martin and Marguerite. –

Dear Bronwyn, It was our 40th wedding anniversary treat to come here. We are enchanted. And I was moved to find my own novel in your bookshelf – And in such august company! It makes me feel as if a part of me will stay contentedly behind. Marguerite Poland
Ancient landscapes, silence, peace. We have never stayed in a place which enchanted us more. The simplicity of the cottage gave it grace – and yet it had every comfort: unobtrusve, sophisticated, thoughtful and charming. The fireplace in the bedroom is a winner. Martin and Marguerite
Thank you for a lovely reflective pause in our lives. The hours in the hammock with that view – pure relaxation. Nothing like blooming aloes for the soul. If you can’t find Jock, it’s because we took him home! We’ll be back. Bev and Tony.
Thank you for sharing this corner of paradise with us! The sublime view of the meandering river, drawing your eye up into the mountains, fading into the afterglow, is like a stairway to heaven! The view, the accommodation, the decor, the attention to detail, the Vanity Fairs, the aloes, the birds, and Jock (honeypot of note) makes for the most amazing getaway ever. And I mean that with all my heart. Just perfect. Nicky and Gavin.
We second everything heartily. The greatest jewel here are Bronwyn and Colin. D&G
An outstanding place. What a pleasure to find a self catering cottage that’s not filled with somebody’s leftover furniture, but rather, stylishly put together for comfort and pleasure. Attention to detail from long matches for the indoor fireplace to a deliciously cozy bed spread to a hammock on the stoep. It really is just perfect. Thank you so much for giving us the pleasure of being able to stay there. Nicky
Dear Bronwyn, Thank you for having us on your farm. We had the most wonderful, restful weekend and have already told many of our friends that they should see and experience it for themselves. We certainly hope to visit again in the future. Kind regards, Lesley
Thank you for sharing your incredible farm with us! We came here to celebrate our one year wedding anniversary and are leaving feeling completely contact and full of joy We will be back, next time with friends to enjoy this beautiful place with us. Ben and Lesley
PS After meeting Jock, we are considering moving our “Let’s get a dog” plan up by a year or two. What a little legend!
Coming from Joburg, this is so uniquely different, what a spectacular piece of our country. Thank you for letting us share it with you. We will definitely be back soon. Angus (11 years old) and Dad.
What a fantastic retreat. We love the silence. We’ll be back. Angus and Vicky.
Another great getaway few days. Peace and quiet – getting back to nature wit our family from JHB. Lovely! Anne and Bill.
Peace, Tranquility and a bit of fun…We’ll be back soon. Shan and Michelle

Had an amazing time! The Skinner family.
A very enjoyable overnight – what a lot of history in The Old School House. A pre-breakfast hike to the river bed whetted appetites for a good breakfast! The road is in such good condition. Thank you very much for a lovely stay – would love to come back. Jennifer, Mariah and Cassie.
Hi Bronwyn, Thanks so much for a great stay at River View!! Kate and I had an awesome time, it is so beautiful and peaceful there. Best regards and thanks again for the notes sent our way to keep us posted. Jean

Too short but a wonderful visit. Would love to come back and stay a little longer, what a gem – so peaceful! Just love your dogs. Sasha, Ross and Danel.
Sandra
This is the most beautiful valley in the world! Philip and Julia
Colin and Bronwyn, Wat ‘n pragtige plek! Baie dankie dat julle mense toelaat ons hier to kuier. Ons kan sien aan hoe julle alles dan dat julle speciale mense is. Ons kom DV weer. Francois and Ludwig
Hi Bronwyn, It was great chatting to you again. If you would like to have a look at the 360 image I shot there, you can go to our website: www.eyeonlocation.com
Once there, on the main page, click on the “Landscapes” category. This will now load the first 360 in the category, but at the bottom is a scroller with a few more options. Scroll all the way to the right hand side, and yours is 4th from the end. Click on the thumbnail, and that will open the 360 tour. You can then click and drag on the image to rotate. You can also launch the fullscreen version, by moving your mouse to the top right of the window, and clicking on the fullscreen icon. Thanks. Regards, Heiko
Beautiful, thanks. Andrew and Ella.
Another wonderful stay and we are that much closer to becoming neighbours. Ian and Margie.
What a beautiful place. Can’t wait to come back again. Thank you. Jonathan and Julie
“Seek and ye shall find paradise surrounds” I believe South Africa is paradise but even so after years of traveling through this beautiful land I am constantly amazed at pockets of pure paradise I find within, this is one of them. Colin and Bronwyn, thank you for sharing this paradise you have with us. It has been a privilege. Keep on living the dream. Ant and Belinda
This place is perfect! We’ll be back. Dirk and Natalie.
So comfortable and well-equipped and such a stunning view – wish my sketch could do it justice! I so wish we had booked for more than one night but we will definitely be back – for a few days next time and bring our fishing rods! The dogs are a pleasure – so friendly and well-trained. A lovely stay, thank you. Juliet and Dave.
We liked your place very much and the view is fantastic. To be recommended. Peter and Marga.
What a way to chill out – eating a meal on the porch with a glass of chilled wine watching the sun setting behind the high Swartberg Mountains and being drenched in the beauty of your valley. And the silence! Bronwyn and Colin, thank you for such a beautiful three night stay here. And also to Jock, who guided us on our walks and who kept his soulful eyes on us continously throughout the day and night. Yes, we eventually capitulated and gave him a titbit or two! So sorry but what can you do after him looking after us. We wish you and your family all the best for the future in this tranquil valley. Tony and Deborah.

Aloes stand posted across the mountain slope like sentinels on guard. The soft flow of the Gamka river winding toward the ocean – traversing rocky patches and harsh turns – like the course of our lives taking the rough and smooth, but pushing onwards knowing that where we leave behind, someone will take over. Hopefully we’ll be back in four days! I loved jock’s banter, especially his breakdancing trick! Alastair and Dayle
Heerlik “rewind” nou weer gecharge vir die week! Robbie and Estelle
Hi Bronwyn, just wanted to let you know that I really enjoyed my stay at the River View Cottages and will definitely recommend it to people I know. Thanks for lending me Jock for the duration of my stay. He swam out to the canoe when I went on the water which was unexpected, so I pulled him into the boat. From reading the guest book I noticed that he has worked his way into the hearts of quite a few guests, made me feel like I was at home, clever dog.Regards,
Hi Bronwyn, We returned yesterday from our holiday. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Matjiesvlei. Its a real oasis in the Karoo. The Old School House is just fantastic. What a jewel, and just what we were hoping for. You can be assured we’ll be back and will recommend it to all our friends. The only suggestion we’d make for the Old School is to hang more ‘old’ photo’s to add to the spooky factor.Regards, Greg, Tam and Ben
Dear Bronwyn, Deborah and I had such a wonderful time at your lovely tranquil Gamka valley and we were lucky with the weather. We were really rested and it is soooo quiet! Your cottages are beautiful and we were sad to leave. Well done to you and Colin. If I may humbly suggest for a slight improvement to the kitchen sink and counter area. It would help to have a small fluorescent light under the shelf as it is quite dark when working and washing there in the evenings.Thank you again as well as to Jock and Jess for being such expert guides on the magnificent walks! Kindest regards, Tony and Deborah
Thanks for the suggestion – fluorescent lamps have been added to cottages! Bronwyn
We’ve been wanting to visit River View for a long time, and so really had no better excuse to go than to celebrate our anniversary weekend. Not being hotel types, we much prefer to find chilled out (and budget friendly) self-catering joints where you can just relax, read, cook, eat and sleep for a few days. luckily you can find so many places that tick those boxes within a few hours from Cape Town.
River View Cottages is just outside Calitzdorp, a town in the Klein Karoo that’s a leisurely 4 hour drive from Cape Town along Route 62 (depending on how many stops you make along the way). owners Colin & Bronwyn left the city to set up home in the Matjiesvlei valley, and as every day passed we became more & more envious of their slice of paradise.
If you manage to stay there (and I urge you do) then you’ll no doubt be paid a visit by Jock – the doe-eyed jack russell terrier who strangely always pitches up around eating time… as well as Jessie, the beautiful boer greyhound, who has a bit more style and finesse than old Jock – but i think that’s part of her clever ploy to get doggie treats. we were more than happy to oblige, in exchange for having temporary pets for 3 days.
And now we’re home again, missing it already. Diana Moss, MissMoss
Thank you once again for a very special time – the rain was magical and the company and chats so warm. Thank you for helping us make this dream a reality (while we’re young enough to enjoy it). Thank you for everything. All our love always, Sam and Carlos.
Thank you Bronwyn and Colin for such a memorable stay in your delightful cottages. We had everything we needed and enjoyed the company of your dogs on our walks. We will return to the UK at the beginning of April with lots of photographs and very fond memories of this lovely valley. Patricia and John.
Had three fantastically relaxing days – loads of sleep – caught one fish. Took a lot of photos. Jock guarded the house for us and went fishing. Bronwyn and Colin have apiece of paradise. We’ll be back. Brian and Di.
Was awesome! Thank you. Lisa and Matthew.
Hi Bronwyn, I just wanted to write to let you know that we had an amazing few days at the River View Cottages, it definitely helped us recharge! Thanks! Kind regards, Olivia
Johan and Elena
We arrived here after three nights in Tankwa staying at Varschfontein and three nights at Simonskloof near Montagu. Both very special places. We did not think we could be third time lucky with accommodation – but we were. Previous writers have said it all. Perhaps just to add that sitting on the stoop watching the evening sky darken behind the silhouette of old man Swartberg’s face and big tummy, with a glass of whatever make you happy in your hand, has to be a particularly contented moment. Dave and Sandy
Dear Bronwyn and Colin (and Jock), Thank you for a truly fantastic stay. Everything was perfect. We leave with our souls refreshed and ready to face the world again. It was the perfect place to stay before we make the move up to Joburg from Cape Town. We will be back soon. All the best. Ben and Kate
“Grond wat rus lewer ‘n goeie oes” Presies die plek om dit reg te kry. Jock, die stoep, hangmat riverroei, sundowners, kaggel in the kamer…subliem. Die enigste fout…ons het net vir een aand geboek! Volgende keer rus ons verder. Dankie Colin en Bronwyn. Cussie en Ilse
Thanks for a wonderful stay once again. We hope we haven’t worn the dogs out! Hope to see you again. Jason and Cheryl.
Dear Bronwyn, Wonderful experience all round. Excellent views, great fishing (yellow fish, carp), excellent port and of course Jock! Had a great time. We are adding this to our annual pilgrimage list…two thumbs up. Thank you, Mushi and Neo.
Change: That has definitely been the ‘title’ of this holiday! And how this land has changed us over the years – from “we’re on holiday, leave us alone, we don’t want to know you’re even there” to looking forward to the time spent together, growing our friendship, you home has a magnetic pull. As you watch this valley come to life in the morning, pause in the heat of the afternoon and slowly unwind in the evening it becomes blatantly clear that everything (and creature) has its own time, its own moment to sparkle in the sunshine or dance under the stars. Thank you for sharing this dream with us, for reconnecting our souls with our hearts and disconnecting our brains for just a little bit. All the love in our rejuvenated hearts. Sam and Carlos.
We had everything we needed for four nights: All amenities, hiking maps, lovely weather, astounding view, books to browse on the lounge chairs, Jock to alert us of visitors, peace and quiet. Best of luck to Bronwyn and Colin. Keep doing what you do so well, we will see you very soon! John and Fatima.
Once again thanks for a truly awesome week of relaxation, adventure, chats, great laughs and soul searching. Thank you for opening your home to us and letting Sam experience the quad.
Here are some pics.Thank You, Carlos Gomes
Hallo Bronwyn, We have recently returned from a most enjoyable trip with our swiss friends,
which started practically at your unbelievably beautiful setting, above the
Gamka River. Boy, were our guests bowled over !! Unfortunately, we had only booked your unique accommodation for one night, on our way towards the ADDO-Elephants-Park, not giving it the deserved recognition, by staying longer !! Whilst we must compliment you (and your hubby) for the very intimate appointments of your 3 chalets, the accommodation at the ‘old school-house’ takes the cake !! How special !! Thank you very much for your incredible hospitality and we want wish you further good luck with your venture, which is so peaceful and homely;
best of luck also goes to the boys with your ‘home-schooling’ !!! We will definately visit you soon, this time for a bit longer !! Kind regards,
Stefan & Moira Pflocksch(on behalf of our local & overseas Swiss Friends !!)
My husband and I stayed at the middle River View Cottage in July and it was such a treat! A rare find where the place is even more beautiful in real life than in the pictures. Gorgeous cottages and spectacular view – plus beautiful surroundings – effect for relaxing and/or being active. Well worth it!
General standard of facilities – 5 stars, Appeal of setting – 5 stars, Professionalism and hospitality – 5 stars, Value for money – 5 stars, Overall rating – 5 stars
Nina. Western River View Cottage. July 2013
Thank you so much River View Cottages for having us, and forcing us to relax away from our city and it’s life. Wishing you all a very Happy New Year, and we look forward to seeing you again.
Arthur and Kim, Cape Town.
Lovely place full of stunning colours, log all your dogs! Thanks for the memorable experience and have a Happy New Year.
Justine and Dan, Australia.
Beautiful! One can’t help but wonder if all this wasn’t put in place for the sole benefit of Jock. Just think about it. He has a constant stream of admirers, play-mates, and love. If it is a dog’s life, then I wan to be Jock, as he has the dog’s life extraordinair! Thanks Bronwyn and Colin for sharing this place with all of us, and thanks Jock for your constant undemanding companionship.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful place! We had the most wonderful day with swimming, hiking, canoeing and all that with the best company, Jock. Jess came last night to watch the stars with us. Thank you, Jess for visiting. I don’t think I have ever seen so many stars in my life. We will be back and take the memories so long.
One nights stay feels like being here for long.
Getting up at 06:00am feels like “let’s go and grab it!”
Having Jock with us feels like knowing him for ages (is that because of Boerewors?).
Watching the turtle passing by feels like calming down.
Sitting on the terrace just feels like “thank you”!
Lana. Hamburg, Germany.
What an amazing “let the soul fly place”. It could easily feel like home!…and I think Justin was right about Jock! All the best,
Stefan. Hamburg, Germany.
Thanks for a wonderful stay once again. We hope we haven’t worn the dogs out! Hope to see you again.
Jason and Cheryl, Cape Town. The sun has reached the peaks across the valley and I am sitting in perfect simplicity in this early morning. It’s tempting me to stay forever, but how? Till next time. Thank you for this taste of bliss.
What made me say “yes” to a 600k trip to spend one night on a farm? And so on January 1st 2013 I found myself, not just on any old farm but in a haven of tranquility and raw beauty where hopes and dreams forgotten – surfaced. The bleakness of the last couple of years is lifting – staying here is the catalyst – Joy has been returned and with it hope, for the future – I will not regret the past nor fear the future. Thank you, Bronwyn, and blessings.
This is the most beautiful place I have staying in in a long while. Thank you, my soul feels healed. Love,
Only stayed for one night (shame I could not stay for more). Had a lovely time, beautiful place, would try to come back in different season. Thank you. And kisses for Jock, our security dog.
Gosia and Chris.
Had a lovely peaceful stay, thanks Bronwyn. Your cottages are beautiful and I know we will be back.
Clare and James.
Enjoyed the spectacular setting and walk by the river – birdwatching, impressive sunrise before we left.
Sandie and Simon.
Sam and Ingrid.
It was more than a weekend away. It was an answered prayer. On the weekend my family was burying my grandfather in the States. Eric and I left Cape Town to find a sense of reprieve. Here we found peace along our morning walk, serenity on our afternoon canoe and gratefulness on our evenings under the stars. A special place filled with unprecedented hospitality. Aesthetic appreciation and warmth. We return with new hearts.
Eric (Cape Town) and Kamey (New York).
Dear Bronwyn, Many thanks for a magical weekend… all made special by the apricot picking, the little treasures from the plants on our hikes, the river, the glimpses of sunset, the picture-postcard mountain and valley views, the tortoise who visited on the last day and, even the giraffe we spotted just before the ‘left turn’. But mostly it was your warm hospitality and welcome that makes it a place we would want to return to. Warm regards,
Sherin. Cape Town.
Thanks so much, and enjoy your little slice of heaven…
The Old School House:
Hi Bronwyn, Many thanks once again for your hospitality – it was fantastic and our kids really enjoyed it.
We may be back again in a couple of weeks but I will let you know as soon as I have finalised. Best regards,
Kevin. Cape Town.
I would like to take the opportunity to thank you for the amazing experience staying in the old schoolhouse.
It was a few magical days – Anton took some magnificent photos and I will send them on to you as soon as he has a finished product. Kind regards,
Karien, Glasgow, Scotland.
You said Colin searched with you, driven by his passion. Passion, persistence, love and joy live simply together in the dream valleys, caves, mountains, long streams. Life is a brief flash – One only of challenge. To find the right food that satisfies our genetic need for a place we might call, and earn the right to truly feel our own. Off the main road after sunset, the light gentle and the path ambitiously seeking a route, we followed to this gem you found and home made sharable to all who might hear by the marvelous grapevine of those who love these stars, cool water, crackling heat and your otter-hounds who swim like they were born to chase every fish and otter. We all feel warm toward you all – the book selection, the balanced sized, simply perfect green, fitting the shadow zone of the school. We felt honoured to be allowed to be here and thank Ian Cumming for his suggestion we find you. Much love,
Catherine (Melbourne, Australia), Henk (Observatory), Katrine, and Konrad (Hout Bay).
Bronwyn and Colin, we see all the love that you put into this beautiful place. Thank you so much, it was a huge privilege to stay here. It was our paradise for three nights. Cheers Jock and Jess. We will miss you. ‘Til next time.
Johan and Anita.
Dear Bronwyn and Colin, Thank you so much for a wonderful stay in your piece of paradise. Also for your kindness and hospitality. We all thought that this was one of the most beautiful place in Africa, if not the world! All the best for everything in future.
Many thanks, Colin and Bronwyn, for a truly wonderful two nights and three days of peacefulness and pleasure, and for your generosity and veld-walk guidance. We hope to be back!
Dorothy, Adelaide, Australia.
And thank you for introducing our British friends to life in the little Karoo.
John, Adelaide, Australia.
A great place to get away from it all. Fantastic scenery – so much to photograph. Thanks Bronwyn and Colin for all your help to solve our mini-disaster! Much appreciated.
Stewart and Evlyn.
Christmas at River View Cottages – perfect! Our third visit but definitely not our last. Re-united with our lovely Jock and his greyhound friend who we named Gloria. Fishing great as always – about 200 altogether (carp, mudfish and yellowish). Thanks once again Bronwyn – hope you also had a great Christmas.
Barbara and Tony, Knysna.
Thank you for the opportunity to experience this beauty. We loved every minute.
Malcolm and Jackie.
I suspect Jock has undergoing a frontal lobotomy – only way we could explain his good behaviour. Totally uncharacteristic for a Jack Russell! Guarded our door all night. Thank you for a lovely restful stay and the delicious apricots.
Colin and Val, Plettenberg Bay.
Rus vir ‘n mens se sill sal jy hier vind. Baie dankie hiervoor. As ek so oor die berg en rivier kyk en alles is still om my deer dink ek aan Koos Doep se gebed.

We loved to be so near God’s creation

My love and I we’ll remember

Francios and Vernette.
Thanks for another great stay, Bronwyn. Accompanied by Jock and the two greyhounds, we did three of your walks at different times of the day. Experienced several mountain moods with the weather swinging from ghostly rain to sweltering heat. Fantastic. Plenty of good bird life to keep us on our toes too. I’m sure it won’t be long before we make our third visit.
Mike and Shiela, Knysna.
A beautiful spot. Thank you.
Kevin and Natalie, Grahamstown.
Thank you for a lovely stay. A lovely place, so relaxing. What a great start to our road trip.
Allan and Sunelle, Cape Town.
What was supposed to be a one night stop-over to our destination turned into paradise. With a glass ofwine and the sunset frosting the mountains in front of us. Time spent in the river was amazing! Unforgettable! We’ll be back.
Darius and Alicia
My boyfriend, Greg was here in April 2011 on a motorbike trip. When he said he would like to bring me her to share this special place…I thought it must be cool! It is sooooo much more awesome than I thought it could be! What an unbelievably beautiful peaceful place and even more special – we discovered our common love of nature as we swam in the river and took in all the sights and sounds of this incredible place together. We discovered our love for each other that has been growing and developing over last eight months. Thank you Bronwyn and Colin for letting us into this unexpected little piece of heaven – we will definitely be back and stay longer next time!
Dominique and Greg.
Blissful, beautiful an restorative in the best way. Thank you.
The Old School House:
The Old School House has become part of our family Christmas tradition. What a beautiful, peaceful Karoo valley to put the year in perspective. We love it here. Goodbye School House and 2012.
Mika, Bella, Ruvan and Lauren. Cape Town.
Thanks for this beautiful place. Lovely garden and very nice interior.Thank you Jock for entertaining us an hiking with us! Vielen Dank.

Die natuur is ongelooflik mooi. Onse het hierdie den nag heerlik geslaap en sal beslis weer dom.

We enjoyed a really peaceful and most pleasant time here with our son and daughter-in-law. Our first night ever in the Klein Karoo – a tonic for the soul. I would like to come ack for a week! Many thanks.
Jain and Ingrid, Umhlanga Rocks.
Dis was werklik ‘n sielsverrykenk envying. ‘n Naweek is hope loos te fort. Die best van ales – geen selfoon ontvangs. Ons het dit baie genet in julle pragtige plekkie. PS. Na waters waar rus is…
Andre and Zulna.
I have googled and thanks to Bronwyn and Colin’s River View Cottages and the stunning views! Just as shown and advertised. Peaceful, tranquil, and a weekend too short! Will most certainly come back in Winter. Enjoyed the walks, swimming, rowing (a bit windy) and chilling out with my old man and good OBS!
Ana and Martin, George.
My husband and I only see each other four times a year as he works out of the country. We always take a couple of days away out of the hustle and bustle of our busy town. We have never come inland before, and we are so glad that we chose your beautiful valley. You own your own piece of heaven here. Peace, tranquility and I wish I could take the view home with me, along with Jock of curse and I’m very sure you will be hearing from us again. We would like to try Winter. What a perfect place. Bless you.
Andrew and Tracey.
Lovely hosts, lovely accommodation, lovely place, lovely birds.
“The nicest place I’ve been to in SA – unspoilt, beautiful landscape” – Margie.
A place we could very easily live in!
PS And lovely dogs!
Ian and Margie.
Thank you very much, dogs! We had a fantastic time, and you showed us some lovely places. Oh, and than you to the rest of the family, too.
Steve and Lee.
We enjoyed our stay, a quick glimpse at your farm, family, lifestyle, awesome. Fun to stay longer, and re-read some of your classics.
Be still and listen. Contemplative beast, stares unseeing, at a fixed point a few feet away. Aware that time has no meaning, meaning has no worth, heedless beast, aware of nothing, serene, deep, enlightened. I mean Jack, Jack-on-the-couch, when no-one is looking.
Random tri-part array, the spirit says there is balance and strength in the number three. Strength, beauty, confidence, each belong to me, and you, the spirit says find balance, be still and listen. Neither four, nor two; three cottages, at last count.
Oracle of sorts, the mountains will speak, when I inquire. Contemplative heart, still, waiting and listening. This place, this valley, South Africa.
Northern sky, bereft of Polaris, Little Bear, how will I find my way, night traveler. Sky so dark, stars so bright they are layered, and infinite. Planets, galaxies, another universe, infinite, I think. I mean the sky at night.
Wait here, I will be right back. Finding yourself, in the company of another, with the intricacy of a well-played game of chess, and the simplicity of a child’s imagination. Time apart to explore, and find yourself, time together to continue the intricate dance, and create new steps.
Yes is the simple answer, whatever the question, asked in sincerity, well-intended. Remembering simple sincerity, simple respect, seems simple, in this restful place.
No regret, no left-over room for would, should or could. A simple life removed from the care and unrest of building upon building, street upon street, sound and fury signifying nothing, ironically, icons of success, without humanity. Surrounded here instead by beauty, simplicity, poetry, books, thinkers, love, Family.
The Old School House:
Thank you for such a warm reception and wonderful hospitality. This is truly a magical place with peace and serenity in abundance. We will love to return.

What a wonderful place! We really enjoyed our days over here. Beautiful view and what a silence. Heel erg bedankt. Baie dankie!
Bastian and Susan, Netherlands.
Just what the doctor ordered for the frazzled ‘city’ souls – deep sleep, Karoo air, good water. All this in simple, comfortable cottages with breathtaking views (and the companionship of two gentle dogs). We are cured!
PS. A pasella – A herd of noble Nguni cattle.
Guy and Mel, Penny.
Baie dankie vir ‘n wonder like naweek web van die gejaagte lewe Jock is regtig ‘n baie special hond (het lekker saam gaan stap, geswem en ons mooi opgepas). Tot ‘n volgende keer.

Give thanks to Him who made the heavens and filled it with heavenly lights,
Give thanks to Him who made the mighty mountains,
Give thanks to Him who placed the waters on the earth and made the Gamka River flow,
Give thanks to Him for the beauty of this vegetation – each leaf, each flower, each fruit,
Give thanks for Jock and his soulful eyes,
Give thanks to Colin and Bronwyn for their sharing River View Cottages with us,
What a blessing- thank you.
Bernhard and Jane, Hermanus.
Such fun to experience this gorgeous valley in the mountains. Wonderful site overlooking one of the most beautiful views I’ve ever seen. Immaculate cottages, built and furnished in perfect good taste, and wonderfully comfortable beds. Everything done in a lovely austere style, superb reading material to dip into briefly. A delightful garden filled with exquisite little plants – the trees are going to be glorious one day. Altogether a great introduction into what is the Little Karoo. Greatly enjoyed. Many thanks.
16th – After a laughter filled journey from Hermanus, with a deviation via Riversdale, where we got rather lost in the hills, we arrived…Lunch at Calitzdorp, and then the car packed with everything but the kitchen sink, int the mountains, marvelling at the pretty ‘Chinese lantern’ bushes by the roadside, and with much expectation, around a final bend and there were the cottages, friendly and peaceful. And what joy once on the vernal, to see the river flowing below, and inside, absolutely everything we needed (should have left the kitchen sink at home!). Cloudy and a little chilly, but after a braai, off to bed…to wake later and open the blind and window to let the night air in – only one little light breaking the darkness of the night.
17th – Sitting on the verandah, in the slight chill of the very early dawn, soaking up the sheer solitude and majesty of the unspoilt surroundings. Lunch all together, another sleep, and then a walk to the Old Post Office and Museum (well done!). Delicious braid Karoo lamb chops and roasted vegetables, and then perchance to dream!
18th – The morning dawned bright and clear, unlike yesterday’s rain, late brunch on the verandah, and another nap. Oh, what joy to just be able to sit and drink it all in, to be with good friends, books, knitting, good food and nice wine. River View is getting to me, and I am awed by the silence, bar the buzzing of the bumble bee, the soughing of the wind through the trees, the pad of Jock’s paws, and the jackal’s cries at night. A walk along the ‘Cliff’s Edge’ route, and back just before a total downpour! Ostrich steaks on the braai for supper!
19th – And now, how sad, our last morning, but after a little early morning rain, some sunshine, and still blessedly cool, we will be on our way. Thank you Lumb family (and Jock and Jessie) for a really soul enriching three nights on your beautiful farm and incredibly well-run and equipped cottage. We loved every minute.
Wim and Penny, Hermanus.
So glad we decided to try this lovely cottage and we hope to return. A very comfortable place with the most amazing views and great walks. Wish we could stay longer! With news of yet another break-in at home in KZN, we so appreciate the tranquil, peaceful safety of this precious place. Jock is mentioned much i the little book and we now understand why. Tour guide and champion cuddled – it has been hard to stick to the rules and not allow him into the house! If our car wasn’t loaded with lekker wine and port from De Kraans, we might have been pemtped to ‘dog-nap’ Jock. Will miss the little guy!
Mike and Aida, Howick.
Thanks for the great stay.
Guy, Mossel Bay.
Just wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed staying at the River View Cottages. It is such a special place and we have lovely memories of our (too brief) time there. Regards to Colin, too and a special pat to Jock and Jessie.

I hope you realise what an extraordinary privilege it is to live in such an incredibly beautiful place! I would trade places with you at the drop of a hat! Thank you so much for your kindness and attention to detail in the cottages, which really made us aware of your desire to make your guests as comfortable and as happy as possible. Going away on mini breaks is our hobby, so with that in mind, your place is one of the few places that we are going to return to (albeit 5 hours drive from home!). Everything was beyond what I had expected, the views, the peace, the stunning cottages, the dogs! My boyfriend is the total opposite of me, he does not like dogs, but great was my surprise when he took an instant liking to your gentle and well-behaved greyhound. Thank you for everything, we will be back!
Corne and Tanya, Stellenbosch.
Dankie weereens vir die voorreg om hier te dom bly. Sien julle binnekort, hierdie ker by Northern River View Cottage.

Beautiful mountains, serene and silent. Good experience.
Mike and Shirl.
Woke up to a little piece of heaven. The view is breathtaking. The fact that there is no cellphone reception is amazing. Loved all the activities from hiking and canoeing to just reading a book from the veranda looking out over the river. Jock is hysterical and addicted to biltong. Thank you so much, will definitely be back.
Storm and Fambai.
Thank you again for a lovely stay in your River View Cottages – I am going to post a recommendation on Trip Advisor for you.

The spectacular view, peace and tranquility is fantastic. Great break from TV and cellphones. You have your own ‘Just Nuisance’ in Jock who has taken over the duties of guarding the cottages. he is a real cutie pie. Had a fantastic rest and it was just what my husband needed to help with his recuperations from his recent op. God bless.
Noel and Joy.
Wonderful, I think I found where I would like my home to be one day, too!
Thank you for a wonderful stay.

Second time around – will definitely be a third, fourth, fifth….last time I was about to be a granny – now I’m a gran of two lit lies! Can’t wait to bring them the Summer for a play on the raft and canoe.

THE OLD SCHOOL HOUSE:
I went to a little school just like this, it brought back wonderful memories. Had a lovely short stay and hope to return one day.
Mike and Rose.
Next time we’ll spend more time. The river, the mountains and ‘kuiering’ at the house was just what we needed.
Patrick, Lara and Gemma.
What a beautiful and breathtaking environment! Thank you for sharing a piece of our peace. We loved the character of this building and sense of time passing and yet the natural environment is still pretty much as it always used to be. This must also be the freshest air in the whole world! Thank you.
Ilse and Neil, Susie and Ian.
We had a great stay, this being stop number five of our road trip. the boys loved the dogs the cat, the chickens, the pony, the river walk, the rocks to climb. And the School House was super comfy. Thanks.

Just as great as the first time. Very warm in the house. Peaceful and relaxing.
What a magnificent place this is! Unfortunately the wet and cold didn’t allow us to walk and enjoy the stunning beauty, aso we will have to return some day to ake full advantage of this lovely place. Many thanks Bronwyn and Colin.

A warm, smiling welcome from Bronwyn set the tone for a wonderful three day, first time, visit. A wonderful piece of paradise! Do keep it this way. We loved the walks, the peace, the views – just everything, including our friend Jock. We wish you much happiness in this beautiful valley. Will be back (to steal the beautiful blanket on the bad and also Jock, but only when he is old and mill not mind living in suburbia). Sally and Norma, Cape Town.
We enjoyed our break here and feel rested after catching up with all the news in the Vanity Fair mags. This is truly paradise. Lovely view from cottage. Jock is a real character. We will be back. Earl and Jean, Cape Town.
Thank you for creating a lovely place to share and relax. Tony.

To re-connecting with old friends – And making some new ones. Thank you for blissful days. Louise.
Thank you for creating such a cool place. Tony.
We arrived in cool, gloomy weather without any expectations. The tall majestic mountains brought us closer to our Mother Earth. Long, rambling walks opened our eyes to a stiller being. On our last morning we woke to a clear, crisp morning with a dusting of snow on the peaks. We leave with an understanding of the contrast of like – stillness beauty in the rare earth. The little creature in Jock brought a smile and we will leave with fond memories of him and this tranquil valley. Mike and Dee, Knysna
Second time just as memorable as the first. Different weather conditions made it interesting. We love this valley, its’ peace, serenity, beauty – everything, and Jock. See you soon. Dave and Rita, Brenton-on-Sea.
Beautiful place. So relaxing. We walked, takes, ate and drank! Jock and Jess were with us guiding us up paths and through thorn bushes. So sweet. Thank you for the lovely experience. Carol and David, Cape Town.
I refer to 8/9/11 – still the same smile and big welcome from Jock – see you next festival. Brian and Shirley.
Another glorious weekend here. The mountain gods were kind and we managed to braai and walk without getting wet on what was a wet weekend. Sunday beautiful and sorry to leave. See you soon. Anne and Bill, Knysna.
Thank you so much for sharing your piece of paradise with us. We really loved being here and in such comfort! The surroundings are awe inspiring and coming to special places like this make slogging in the city worthwhile! Allan and Cilla, Cape Town
Thank you Bronwyn and Colin. We had a wonderful weekend, despite the freezing cold weather – and all this in the Karoo! Thought I would quote a poem by Ruth Everson, as it seemed appropriate. Much love, Duncan and Clare, Knysna.
Stone Beat There is earth in this dust In the sand-soft shifting There is weight In each, each grain is grit There is water in this stone Quietly hollowing towards surface It slips through arthritic cracks Drop by drop Grain by grain A moment of meeting An elemental twitch And earth is flesh And stone is beating
The final wow was the sprinkling of snow on the top peaks.
This was joyful, peaceful, beautiful, cheerful, thankful. And that’s how we are going back…’FULL!’ Thanks, yet again, for letting us share this awesome spot and part of the world. We’ll be back! God bless you and yours. Shalom. Riaan and Vlam, Riversdale.
What a piece of paradise! Our four days left like one – batteries recharged! We look forward to our Summer visit – to enjoy the swims and all that the heat may bring. You have created a superb getaway. “Thank you” does really not seem enough! Eric and Gill
Hi Bronwyn, Many thanks for everything. You and your family have got something very special here. Thanks for sharing it. We’ll be back – we’ve left many things we still want to do! Keep well. Janet and John, May 2012
Sitting here, having a glass of 2007 Temprinillo, watching the stars, my music (as well as the night life) in the back round of my thoughts – clarity – friendly Jock (yes, the dog) lying next to me…Does life get any better? Owl hoots in the background, crickets chirping. The silence and good red wine give me time to rediscover myself. The spectacular view, fresh air and awe inspiring surroundings help. Three more days until I am thirty! This trip to the River View Cottages is a combo of my dad, Dave’s 62nd birthday and mine, I couldn’t think of any other way to better spend this time than here. I may fill more pages – apologies for being a ‘page hog’. If, however, I do not…Thank you to the Lumb family and to the Symm family (my mom and dad) for this humbling journey. Leanne, May 2012
Die grootheid van God is hier so sigbaar en is ons dankbaar dat ons hier kan oorbly! Ons kom weer en dan bly ons langer in jully pragtige huisies. Koos en Jan, May 2012
‘Beautiful!’
May God bless you always and also everybody that comes to stay in your lovely cottages! Ons kom terug…en vogende keer, met ons seuns en hul ‘girlfriends’! PS Jock is the best…even growling for you Bronwyn, his ‘mamma’ to protect me and his territory, the cottages…so sweet! Marius and Hesre, May 2012
Hi Colin and Bronwyn, did not have a chance of meeting with you, but many, many thanks for a wonderful stay! Indeed appreciated! The accommodation was excellent. We really love your decor…and the majestic Karoo! We will be back! Marius, May 2012
* I refer to 8/9/11 – still the same smile and big welcome from Jock. See you again next festival. Brian and Shirley, May 2012
The best weekend away from the ‘real’ world. The River View Cottages are the best way to clear the mind and re-connect with your soul. I planned a surprise weekend for my boyfriend, never knowing or expecting it to be such a fantastic experience. We did the cliff’s edge walk and Jock was our guardian all the way. He is such an amazing, fun, loving dog with an extraordinary personality. We had an amazing time and will miss it so, so, so much! Thank you for your warm welcome – be sure to see us again in the very near future. Charmaine and Eugene, April 2012.
Beautiful place to stay (we’d love to try it when it’s older too). I think I overdosed on Vanity Fair! Mark and Rodrik, April 2012.
Fantastic place, awesome views, brilliant sunsets and rises, lovely bird life, Jock, peaceful – we just loved being here with our daughter (from JHB), how she battled initially to the lack of pace in life – but leaves totally refreshed and ready to face life in the fast lane again. Our sort of place and we’ll be back again! Thank you so much for the experience. Dave and Rita, April 2012
We saw this little book as we were leaving – would have loved to have read more of what everybody said. Such utter poetry! And that is what this piece of paradise inspires – a feeling of poetry. Chris and Haley, March 2012.
We give thanks to our wonderful hosts for the welcome and the hospitality, and all Glory to God for the abundance of beauty and wonder. What a fantastic stopover, never to be forgottten. Martin and Lesley, March 2012.
We can only echo what others have already said – a great discovery of this lovely area and peaceful valley. We enjoyed it so much, one of us watching the birds, the other exploring the books – possibly unique as a holiday house in providing a life of Wittgenstein! Many thanks. Robin and Celia, March 2012. PS. Thank you Jock for looking after us. PPS. This place so exemplifies the maxim that Less is More.
Inspiration taken from the magic of the majesty of Matjiesvlei and a little John Denver – Country Roads: Almost heaven, Western Cottage, Marble Mountains, Rolling Gamka River. Time stood still here, In the magic of the trees, In he mystery of the mountains, And the whispers of the breeze. Country Roads, Took me there, There where magic’s everywhere, River Farm, Majestic mountains, Country Roads, brought me here. I hear the wonder of the morning, how it calls me, Rising up to welcome more magic in the day. Now we are left wondering, how will we leave? When we only got here yesterday, yesterday…Country Roads, bring us back, To where the river runs a track. Our sad goodbyes leave us blue, to Mr Gecko, and tortoise too, As one last time we admire the view, How we’ll miss this, through and through. The place of regal rock, and the friendly faithful Jock. Who looks on sadly as we pack, Country Roads, please bring us back. Thank you for the magic. Best wishes. Kalinka and Craig, March 2012.
THE OLD SCHOOL HOUSE:
Just a wonderfully relaxing stay, too short! Two Canadians enjoyed every minute. Rob and Colleen, February 2012.
This is not a stopover. The minute you arrive you know you never going to be ready to leave. Living proof that less is more and simple is super. Quality of life is everything…the view, the tortoise, the river, the silence! Don and Sue, February 2012.
Two reasons that made it almost impossible to leave: The place: wonderful, magical, spiritual, peaceful; Jock: a true friend. Thank you for sharing both and for your great hospitality – our stay exceeded all our expectations! Irina and Michael, February 2012.
A privilege to visit this exquisite corner of this beautiful country – the vivid memories of Matjiesvlei will sustain us until we can come back for more. Michael and Jan, February 2012.
We came back and could have stayed forever! This is the most amazing, most magical and truly inspiring place we’ve been to. Thank you so much for welcoming us back – it’s been wonderful!!! Irina and Michael, February 2012
Just a wonderfully relaxing stay, too short! Two Canadians enjoyed every minute. Rob and Colleen, February 2012.
We had a short stay and were very lucky with the cool weather. Instead of fishing and swimming we decided to look around in the area and drove the Seweweeks Poort. Beautiful! Thanks Bronwyn and Colin. Jan and Inje, February 2012.
After our first night, we felt two nights was not enough to fully appreciate this exquisite location. Immediately we asked to stay one more night. Now we are about to depart and with a heavy heart we leave. We swam, we sat under the stars, we paddled, we made a bonfire. We talked, we discussed and we grew a little closer. The isolation and remoteness of the cottages really makes you stop, think and embrace what is immediately around you. The silence was at times deafening but it is something we are so afraid of in our ordinary lives. You learn to appreciate it here and bask in its space. Space and silence. We filled our space and silence at times with laughs and embraces and kisses. Memories here will forever be etched in our hearts and minds. Jock: we love you. Fell like our dog. Never forget you diving into the water after us in the canoe. Every step of the were there. We will miss you, pup! Bjorn and Johanna, February 2012.
Tips: Bring a game: we played Rumikiet every night; something to sit on by the bonfire and watch the stars – the wooden chairs were hard after a few minutes; a spatula – makes cooking a lot easier; a fan – we had some hot nights here. BUT all in all, this place is perfect!!! Bjorn and Johanna, February 2012.
Thanks for the tips – much appreciated. The spatula has been replaced; cushions are in place; and we have eventually found great standing fans for the cottages, that are both quiet and effective. Kind regards, Bronwyn – The River Farm
THE OLD SCHOOL HOUSE:
Visiting the River Farm has been a pleasure and so relaxing – hiking on the beautiful trails, swimming and canoeing on the river, viewing stunning sunsets with the mountains all around – and staying in The Old School House made it all complete. Thank you for sharing all this (and the stone work too) with us! Jerry, Jane and Emma, February 2012.
Such fun, love The Old School House. Here from Boston, MA, happy to be visiting SA. Beth and Jay, February 2012
Thank you! Had a gorgeous time. Made my Attakwas even better. I cannot stay tonight as well – but will be back soon as always. Take care xxx Ansa, January 2012.
Dit was baie lekker, soos altyd. Dankie. Wilfred and Elize, January 2012.
Hot! But beautiful and peaceful. Love the views. Lots of wildlife on our walks and rides (mongoose, mice, hare, tortoise, gemsbok, fish, black-backed jackal and lots of birds). Oh and a dog! Thanks. PS. A fan might be nice in the bedroom and a sheet (too hot for a duvet!) Cheryl and Jason, January 2012.
Perhaps we never truly recover from the loss of a loved one, but a mountain can remind us of our own impermanence, nature can remind us of the wonder and continuity of life, and a river can carry away a few of our tears. A dear father and his two sons found some peace and healing here. Thank you. January, 2012.
Thanks Bronwyn, You’re very kind. I hope to be back here some day and will show all my friends in Cape Town and London the photo’s so I’m sure you’ll be seeing a few! Best wishes, Ray. January 2012.
THE OLD SCHOOL HOUSE
Hi Bronwyn, Thanks for an amazing stay. We loved your place and Jock. See you soon. Anne, Sophie and everybody, January 2012.
We had a fantastic time here! Enjoyed the books, lovely swims and walks (some could be a little better marked) and very warm and friendly hosts! Thank you and Happy New Year! Toby and Ashleigh, January 2012.
Thank you for a lovely stay! We loved The Old School House and had a most wonderful swim in the river. We definitely hope to come back again, when we can stay for longer! Sharone, Matt and Mira, January 2012.
Thanks a lot Bronwyn! Great stay, great view, place ambience, etc. Wonderful dog Jock, joined me for long run into the kloof! Fantastic! Shalk, Julita, Chardonnay and Rozanne, January 2012.
Thank you for a wonderful and relaxing retreat! We loved The Old School House and hope to return soon! Cynthia and Erica, January 2012.
On arrival we were greeted with peace and quiet, nothing but beautiful Karoo scenery and a cosy, rather modern cottage with lovely finishes. We enjoyed our walks with ‘Jock’. Enjoyed watching Bronwyn and family take a leisurely drive on their tractor and trailer with kids, and Greyhounds following behind – it is lovely to see them relax too! We really, really loved the stay. The only little problem we had was the comfort of a too soft mattress that had us aching the following day. We would love to return even for long weekends often, but the mattresses need serious attention. Further more this getaway deserves a 10-out-of-10 rating and I wish them all the best with their little paradise. Thank you so much for a beautiful stay and I hope you let us know when you get comfy mattresses, and we sure will be back in a jiffy.
We would love to visit again, but for longer. It is beautiful there. Bronwyn is very friendly and helpful. The mattress was a bit soft – maybe you can look at that. No other complaints.
Thanks, Birgit and Marina. We have replaced the mattresses with new ones! Kind regards,
Excellent!!! Wish we could have this peaceful relaxing lifestyle everyday! Thanks to Bronwyn and family. Merry Xmas and a prosperous New Year. Leona and Henry, December 2011.
Awesome! Wow! I could hear God’s voice, my thoughts, peace, joy. And all this by simply being quiet. Will definitely be back! Riaan and Vlam, December 2011.
Next year I’ll be a 6year medical student. There is someone new in my life and I am excited about all the possibilities! I feel like I’m on the brink of something great! But it’s gonna cost me – my time, my energy, my love…my life. This house and farm was a place for me to quiet my soul and relax into this ‘unknowing phase’ in my life. I reached a point, under the stars, and I told God, “I am ready.” Hane, December 2011.
Very sorry to be leaving this very special place today. It has been a wonderful, relaxing break spent with all my family dotted in houses across the valley. Fantastic to spend time together and equally wonderful to retreat back to Southern River View Cottage for a bit of quiet and lazy afternoons on the stoep. Thank you! Happy New Year! Paula, December 2011.
Two nights is not enough time to spend here! Dear Bronwyn and Colin, You two have fabulous things going here with these cottages. Thank you for sharing your wonderful piece of the Karoo with us. It was just what Colin and I needed as a R&R spot on our honeymoon. Jen and Colin, December 2011.
I cannot fully express how wonderful my time here has been. The humdrum world has gone away and I am filled with a wonderful natural world of silence, peace and tranquility. The location is manna from heaven to my soul. A fantastic introduction to SA for a wondering Brit. As Jenneke has said, “we will be back,” and I can’t wait. Apart from all the beauty around me, I am very impressed by the very high quality of our accommodation. It is complete and wanting nothing, apart from a broom, LOL. My sincere congratulations to you both in providing such wonderful accommodation. Both very professional and and very homely. Our profound thanks. Colin (disillusioned Brit) and Jenneke (SA farm girl), December 2011.
If you believe in heaven and magic is your charm, go to the Swartberg mountains to a place called the River View farm. “The landscape of the soul.” Philimon, December 2011.
If for a moment, you centre your thoughts and concentrate over the sights, sounds, smells that your are experiencing right now, you will find your inner bliss! How very privileged are we who are able to be in such a place, to throw off our city cares and stress, and to let this wonderful experience seep through our pores. Thank you to our hosts for allowing us to share in their little piece of heaven. May you continue forward, blesses by all that surrounds you. We will certainly take with us, a bit of this heaven, in our hearts! Piet and Ronin, December 2011.
This is the perfect place to practice the ‘Power of Now’ (on the bookshelf). Forget about yesterday and forget about tomorrow. Never mind what happened an hour ago, don’t worry about what you will be doing in an hours time. You can’t change the past you don’t know what the future will bring. Sit, look, listen to the sounds of nature, listen to your breathing. What a blissful place and moment for your mind, body and soul. Elke, December 2011.
This place speaks to my soul. You find a calmness here which is bliss to us city folks! Awesome view! The cottage is beautiful and we had a lovely stay! Jock is a sweetie. Enjoy the valley and nature – you are so lucky. Daleen and Bossie, December 2011.
It’s been an absolute pleasure to be back at the River View Cottages. Walking, cycling, swimming and relaxing. I was so glad to see my good canine companion Jock again. He embodies the spirit of this special place. Thanks again for excellent accommodation, wonderful hospitality and a spectacular view! We will be back again. Erin and Matt, December 2011.
Exquisite, bellisimo- Thank you! December 2011.
What a wonderful discovery. You are privileged to enjoy this beauty permanently. We love the cosiness, the cleanliness, the scenery. If we find any fault it’s the bed – too small and too soft. Thanks for the great stay! Glynn and Bebe, December 2011.
Thank you for letting us know, Glynn. We have replaced the bed with a new one! Kind regards, Bronwyn. December 2011.
An absolutely amazing place to welcome the New Year! Awesome: Tranquility, view, river, mountains, stars. A magical place. Thanks for having us here! Arit and Mardince, December 2011.
This was the third leg of our holiday – Garden Route, Eastern Cape game reserve and now Little Karoo. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here, in this well presented cottage. The bird life was good, and we saw several new ones. The view from the stoep is something special. Thank you for a taste of Karoo farm life. Clive and Sandy, December 2011.
The road that brought us here: a dream. The cottage (simple but stylish), the valley, the river, the mountains, the fireplace, the stars, the early morning: A fairytale. Joost and Ingrid, December, 2011.
Dear Colin and Bronwyn, Thanks for a lovely stay on your beautiful farm! Aesthetics met with great approval from two architects and the setting is perfect. Thanks for capturing our gecko residents and thanks for the crate! Love to Jock! Rose and Morne, December 2011.
What a wonderful stay we had in the Karoo – beautiful views, excellent accommodation and equipped magnificently. Thank you very much. David and Miranda, December 2011.
Just a quick note to say that Nicholas and I had such a lovely stay at River View last week. The peace and beauty were just what we needed. We also enjoyed the ever present company of Jock who followed us on our walks, for our swims and even tried to hitch a ride in the canoe. I am attaching 2 Photos I took of him which I thought you might like. I have a Jack Russel myself and know just what characters these dogs are.
We had a wonderful time in this beautiful place. Theo and Ille, December 2011.
Dear Bronwyn and Colin, We had wonderful, peaceful days here and enjoyed it most. Thank you for combining this beautiful place with good taste and positive vibes and Jock! Ille, Theo and Fritz, December 2011.
Hi Bronwyn, My husband and I stayed at your West Cottage on 29 and 30 Des, and I really just want to take the time to say thank you for the lovely time we had! We did a road trip in the Karoo and went to Buffelsdrift (4 star) in Oudtshoorn for New Year, but I can honestly say that River View is my top pick! We had such a relaxing get-away, swam like two children, rested out like we haven’t done in ages and it was fabulous! I wanted to pop by to pay you in person, but then the laziness crept in as I laid on the hammock and I just could not get up! I have posted about your accommodation on FaceBook and will really recommend River View! What a stunning little gem! So neat, tidy and clean! We will be back!! Big kiss to Jock for me! Love, Hilde. December 2011.
Dear Bronwyn & Collin, When Theo & Ille asked me to join them, I halfheartedly said ok, let’s see, maybe, and so on…………and then we arrived and I set on the stoep of MY cottage and I felt @ home like never before….In german we say; atemberaubend, and even such a big word is not enough! Studied, meditated, philosophized, and decided to water your Kareeboom at the hottest time of the day and thereby causing your tank to run dry and giving Collin the headache of a lifetime, not to speak of the rather unloving remarks of my then not so friendly friends. Thank you both for a more than wonderful time. Kind regards, Fritz, also known as Philimon. December 2011.
Dear Bronwyn, I am sending this email as we didn’t get a chance to see you again and we want you to know just how much we were blown away by our stay. The cottage was divine and the views to die for! Both mornings I was up early to enjoy the quiet and the way the shadows on the mountains constantly changed the vistas. It was quite magical. We also enjoyed visits from two very friendly little dogs who came to say hello a few times. Also a special treat for us was the little nest above our stoep light with 3 babies in it. We never tired of watching the 2 very hard-working parents constantly feeding them. Our opinion was that they looked large enough to be booted out but were cashing in on the goodwill of their parents! It reminded us of our own child-rearing!! Anyway, once again, thank you for letting us share in your little bit of heaven. We hope to come back in the winter, when hopefully we’ll see some snow. Regards, Ronni. December 2011.
Idyllic! 10/10. Beautiful cottage in superb river setting. Excellent fishing – 80 carp, 30 yellowfish. Birding also excellent. Lovely Jock with us 24/7. Thanks Bronwyn. We’ll be back. Tony and Barbara, Western RVC, November 2011.
Fortuitous, lucky, born to be, that’s how we found ourselves, here in a valley of lushness, greenery and serenity. Beyond, the mountains guard this treasure. How blessed are we to stumble on Matjesvlei. Barbara and Tony, Southern RVC, November 2011.
A chemical free solution to the stress of my everyday life! Loved it. Fred, November 2011
A big thank you for the food rescue at the end of a long journey here to this beautiful spot. Birds and plants of huge variety and interest. Thank you for your kind hospitality. Jean, November 2011.
Dear Bronwyn and Colin, Thank you very much for making us feel so welcome. Stephen and Jean, November 2011.
What a surprise to find after the last 7km, this lovely place. I’ll never forget! Kornelia, November 2011.
Hierdie was ‘n great stop. Die uitsig, die verskeidenheid woels, die riveir, die klanke, lig spel van die dag se begin en einde en die magtige berg…en dan die gasvryheid! Cornie en Elsie, November 2011.
We fell in love with the pictures on the internet. Now that we are here it becomes reality. We had a lovely time. Nico, Yoneke and Kornelia, November 2011.
We loved the design, we loved the decor, the stillness, the view, the bright stars and welcome by Jock. All in all, a little bit of a paradise in the Karoo. Alan and Marlene, October 2011.
We feel you must be soul mates! The books we have read – all the care in the detail. The friendly gentle Jock – first Jack Russell x I have ever met that is obedient! Well done! A million thanks for this miraculous spot! Margie and Gus, October 2011.
Thank you for everything. We had a wonderful stay. You have a stunning place and it will be a privilege to visit you again. Janus and Corli, October 2011.
Thank you for a wonderful stay. I am quite envious that you get to spend every waking day in such unspoilt land. Robert, an architect not given to easy compliments, thought the cottage a gem. He loved the way it had been finished, how all the parts “worked” together so well. Gideon and Robert, October 2011.
Beautiful tranquil place. We came, we saw, we left, but we will be back again to do some fishing. You have an awesome place. The Thiarts, October 2011.
Such a special space! Your passion is clearly noticable in every detail in and around the cottage. Being here I had a very strong urge to create. Thank you for sharing this magical place. Arsa, October 2011.

Baie dankie vir alles, dit is pragtig hier en ons gaan verseker weer kom. Anel en Hugo, October 2011.
What an incredible place this is. Beautiful setting and gorgeous cottages. Your care in every detail, from the simple yet stylish interiors, to the beautifully set out trails was a pleasure to experience. We haven’t been this relaxed in years. Bridget and Ryan, October 2011.
Breathtaking! Watching as the sun wakes and casts different shadows and shades over the mountains, what a way to wake up. Very jealous of Colin’s morning routine – we pack into a confined air conditioned building, torturing ourselves on electronic devices to burn off extra calories and get fit, Colin grabs the Greyhounds, runs along the river and then dives in for a few laps – Virgin Active could learn from you Mr Lumb. Thank you for restoring our souls, we leave our hearts in this valley. Jock is my love. Jock4eva. Sam and Carlos, October 2011.
Amazing. Life’s simplest pleasures are the greatest. Justin and Keren, October 2011.
As fellow guest house owners, what a pleasure to arrive in such a clean comfortable and well equipped unit. This spot is food for the sole! We will definitely recommend River View Cottages to all our guests travelling the R62. Jock was a welcome companion. Jan and Erika, October 2011.
The cottage. The View. The books (& magazines). All exceed expectations. A superb four days of R and R (with Jock in tow)! Mike and Janet, October 2011.
The Old School House: What a wonderful time of the year to visit our spiritual home! The flowers, bird an animal life are spectacular. As we drove into the valley along the rather long 7km driveway, worries and city like melted away – Thank you for the rejuvenation, the fresh air, the warmth of the Lumb clan (including the four legged) and for the treasured memories. Love Always. Sam and Carlos, October 2011.
The Old School House: Wonderful three nights that felt like time suspended; best way to forget about town stresses. Lovely rain-filled day spent puzzling and gazing onto folding green mountain vistas framed by sash windows. Then sunny day spent rowing and getting happily lost on the School Children’s walk. Jock a constant companion. Be back! Stef, Cindy, Annabelle and Louisa, October 2011.
The Old School House: Loved being here, once again. Definitely planning to stay longer next time. And another hike? Pim and Thera, October 2011.
The Old School House: The School House and the farm are like a precious gem, one that we will be back to visit again. We had a fantastic time, thank you! Neil, Lorren and Eryn, October 2011.
We don’t read poetry, but we do read books. We like to travel to far away nooks. Tis many a mile to the emerald Isle, but nothing compares to Bronwyn’s smile. See you again. Brian and Shirley, September 2011.
Superb spot! Wish we had planned for longer, but will definitely come back. Bev and Brian, September 2011.

The Old School House: A wonderful find. Not finding Melinda, Bronwyn made us welcome. It was meant to be! The Old School House brought on childhood memories each telling their stories round the fire in a blissful eveing. A night to treasure. Thank you, Colin and Bronwyn. Bert and Norma, September 2011.
“This morning as we woke, an eagle called our name; the crow answered back…and somehow our soul feels no more the same.” Us. Thanking you for opening your doors to travellers like us, always looking for a place that is calm, relaxing and as beautiful as God intended nature to be. A place where couples can re-connect and enjoy being together with the only distraction, true ‘Little Karoo’ – beauty…and the occasional sound from our friend, Jock! Seeing you again soon. The Bosch’e, July 2011
Awesome place, good energies and tranquility. Good books, love the views, will be back. Riaan, July 2011.
Besonderse mense en beonderse plek! D&M, July 2011.
‘n Fantastiese naweek, te vinnig verby! 500 foto’s verder en ons sal dit beslis nie vergeet…Vredevolle, sielsrus, salig na aan ons skepper ‘n naweek net soos ons gevra het. “I’ve been followed by a moon shadow…Leaping and hopping in a moonshadow”.
We think this is the most beautiful and tranquil place we’ve ever stayed in. The aloes and succulents are in full flower at this time and are incredibly fantastic. The stars at night look close enough to reach out to and touch. We’ve so enjoyed our walking and birding – two newies for us were the fairy flycatcher and the yellow fronted sparrow. Seeing the fish eagles and hearing their call reminded us of our life in Malawi. It has been lovely here – thank you. Tom and Regine, July 2011.
Baie dankie dat ons in hierdie plek kon deel. Ons hoop om gou weer te kom en teen dan sal ons, ons baba dogertjie die plek kan kom wys. Lara en Riaan, July 2011.
First impressions: A hidden valley with history, not only mountains, views, a river, but a place discovered through adventure by pioneers that found a place of abundance. Soft moonlight, a peaceful noisy stillness. Sounds, shadows, serenity. A perfect moment in time, captured (experienced) but never repeated. May our stay bring forth the important thoughts of reflection and inner soul finding. Only in this quietness can we hear our own true thoughts.
After thoughts: Time has come and gone. A cottage of image is all that remains. Mountains protecting us from the outside world. A river that gives life, entertainment, exercise. Changing colours – sunshine, shadows, moonlight. The movement of time captured within the confines of a small valley. A true piece of heaven – or as close as we can get on Earth.
Thanks: The books in the library is an exciting collection. The map with walks, etc. very nice touch. The hammock – perfect relaxation. The canoe – wonderful way to explore the river. Water from shower watering a tree – fantastic, briliant. For the enjoyable stay – thanks. Grevile and Sharon, July 2011.
The Old School House: Bronwyn, Colin and boys, Thank you for a wonderful and peaceful three day stay. Words cannot describe how we experienced the silence, birdsong and sweet smell of veld and flowers. And then the amazing history of this building – What a privilege for those who went to school here, and can come back to visit. Thank you Cole, for the fishing gear! Alfie, Liezl, Roelof and Lara. July 2011.
The Old School House: Thanks for a wonderful few days! I found The Old School House online a couple of years ago and knew it would be great – it has taken us a few years to get here and it has exceeded all our expectations. A real gem! We will definitely be back. Kelvin, Belinda, Joel, Luke and Kyla. July 2011.
The Old School House: Had a great time – a special place to visit. Molenaar and Joubert family. July 2011.
Everything about this place were beyond our imagination and expectations. We felt welcome from the very first moment we arrived. Thanks, many thanks to you all, Bronwyn. And Jock, you are our darling. We are coming back. Blessings and warm regards. Ami and Christine. August 2011.
What an absolutely amazing experience! We were in awe yet again of God’s greatness through Nature, being in a valley with so much beauty and splender gave us such peace and tranquility. Beauty like this must be experienced. The snow capped mountains took our breath away. Thanks for making our experience convenient, simple and easy. No TV, no cellphone coverage and no radio was a blessing in disguise. We would recommend your cottages to anyone. Thanks. This was the perfect Winter getaway. Brandon and Madre, August 2011.
Too short. Will be back for longer. Lourens and Marina, August 2011
The Old School House: What a super place! We had a wonderful time. We hope to visit again. Thanks and regards. Foley family, August 2011.
The Old School House: Just checked our last entry that said “back soon” only to see it was dated Jan 2009! I suppose the new arrival kept us away. But Zane really loved it here and says ‘thanks’ for the extra dirt! A wonderful stay, as always, and this time we really will see you again soon! Becky, Kurt and Zane, Betsy and Floyd. August 2011.
Sorry no poetry or artistic expression just ‘BLERRIE LEKKER’ Luv ja Jock. Andre and Dianne, June 2011.

We had a wonderful time – accommodation is excellent and port Festival was fun. Thought I was going to be extremely cold so loaded up on warm things but wasn’t necessary – well done, you cater for all. Thanks for everything. Johan and Manon, May 2011.
We first came to this valley five years ago. Nothing has changed. Even on the rainy day of our arrival, we found it to be beautiful and intriguing. It’s the people and place to unwind, and Jock of course, is a splendid little companion. Mike and Sheil, May 2011.

Everyday so much to do and everyday all things are new and fresh and bright, like morning dew – That’s how things are, at River View. We had a great time! Thanks for sharing the magic. David and Jane, 2011.
Different people have different views on what constitutes Paradise, River View comes very close to our ideal, with it’s majestic mountains, and flora. We spent our three days here, exploring all the local magnificent passes and poorts – Montagu, Robinson’s, Cloete, Rooiberg, Huisrivier, Seveweekspoort, and Bosluys down to Gamkapoort dam. Swartberg and Die Hel are still install for us (and Meiringspoort, too!). We are keen lovers of birds an we saw a good variety here. …Thanks to Bronwyn, Colin and Jock for your idyllic cottage and for making us so welcome here. Joe and Marge, April 2011.

x3 BMW 1200 GS bikes, all the way from Durbs and Joeys, three intrepid drivers and two lady pillions – that’s us! On our way to CT. What an overnight stop! You offered us solace from the noise of our madness. Roaring fire – spaghetti bolognaise – thanks for the loan of your pots! Will be back – if only to see our dinner guest, Jock! Love John, Lol, Greg, Dave and Natasja, April 2011
Long overdue, our meeting. Your quest for a life out of the city, a place to allow your two delightful boys freedom to explore and be, is admirable. This is a very special spot with mountains, heat, cold, water, dryness and unique vegetation. A wonderful three days for Sandi and me. Thank you. Peter and Sandi, April 2011.
Thank you once again for an unforgettable stay at this magical place. We’ll be back! Japie and Joyce, April 2011.
Not all people are able to feel or touch their inner souls…I challenge that notion in a place like this. The unbelievable peace that descends on your mind, body and soul in a place of such beauty is transfixing. Lying in the hammock, the icy breeze of a cold front blowing, wind gently breezing, cotton wool clouds and impenetrable silence…this is the most amazing peace I feel. …Thank you for sharing your special place with us all, we are blessed. Greg, April 2011.
Recipe for contentment: Add a night. Heat the fire until fire flames turn into yellow dancing men. Add a lot of awe. A pinch of imagination. Mix well together. Then leave on the stoep to rest. Arise to find a perfect River Cottage morning. Stewart and Corlie, Narch 2012.

Happy Human Dights day everybody! Thank you – we enjoyed everything (including the great collection of books on the shelf!). Okay here is my attempt at writing something: About: There is something about the mountains that make me feel small, there is something about water that makes me draw near, there is something about the quiet that makes me listen, there is something about life that makes me want to live, there is something about you that makes me me. Hugo and Suzanne, March 2012.
Bronwyn and Colin, What a great honour to be welcomed to this precious wonderful peace of land. You are so fortunate to live in these peaceful mountains. …Thank you for sharing this beautiful cottage, warm hospitality and kindness you share with us. It was a great opportunity to become a part of your lives. Magda and Solly Kruger, February 2011.
I did a new thing, I swam like a tadpole, floating like a simply life form in the river. Will be back to do it at night. Anyway, for that moment, I felt happiness. It is beautiful here “There is a light inside us all, it shines as Bright as we are.” See you soon again, Jock. Cam and Rian, February 2011.

When we mentioned to friends that we were on our way to the small Karoo in mid-December, we were met with incredulous looks – December heat in the small Karoo – are we mad?! What a good decision it was. We have been blessed with beautiful surroundings, lovely weather and warm hospitality – thank you. If only it weren’t so far from Johannesburg…We’ve taken some great photos and will definitely spread the word. N and P, December 2010.
Thanks for sharing your farm with us. Cottages 5 star! Hospitality 5 star! See you soon. D and G, December 2010.
I came away to seek something else…To seek a place where I felt my soul. My soul lies here within these mountains, down the valley, across the river, dancing in the breeze. To leave it saddens me, but I know I’ll soon return. Thanks for a magical place and wonderful hospitality. Erin and Mat, December 2010.
Dit is mooier as the Gamkaskloof ‘Die Hel’, waar ons al twee keer was en baie makliker bereibaar. Gaan wyd vertel van die pragtige plek. Dankie vir die gasvryheid. Sien jou weer. Winston en Jackie, December 2010.
We just came to overnight but waht a marvelous place it is. We’re sure to come back and ejoy a much longer say. Bronwyn is amazing and Jock, well what a welcome we received from him. Chandon and Nasreem. December, 2010.

We came for a simple stop-over on R62 and discovered the peace of silence and beauty – the seemingly never ending rolling hills and mountains. A gem! Pierre and Mariette, December 2010
We’ll be back – great hikes but the tranquility outshines it all. we’re still waiting for Jock’s visit! Maija and Christiaan, December 2010.
Great peace and quiet, big storms, beautiful brooding mountains and fabulous (if scratchy) vegetation. We had a great time exploring the hills on our bikes, drifting on the raft on the river and meandering up the kloof. Thanks. Jason and Cheryl, December 2010.
Drie nagte hier geslaap. dit was heerlik. Die stilte, die omgewing. Baie dankie, sal wier kom. Anton, December 2010
Der zufall hat uns her gefuhrt. Gern sind wir geflieben. Hatten eine schone zeit. Kommen sicherlich mal wieder. Wenn unser weg zum Gamka fuhrt. Dan aan Colin u Bronwyn. Brigitte and Gunter, November 2010.
What wonderful, peaceful, surroundings these cottages provide. We had an awesome stay and even experienced a ‘veldfokus’ moment with the birds protecting their nest from a Boomslang. We loved every moment! Hope to see you soon. Thanks a million. DJ and Elaine. November 2010.

Thank you for sharing this beauty and peace with us. We will be back! Jaria, Pierre, Janette and Fanie, October 2010
Thank you for sharing this beautiful gem with us! The view is extraordinary! The slim cooling river, the steep, tempting mountains and of course the clear blue sky. The peace and quiet was just here for us to enjoy. Also we must give our thanks to Jock for being such a good friend and making us feel welcome and at home. …This place has inspired me and us as a couple and we will bring it with us in our hearts. Lina, October 2010.
Thank you for the wonderful peaceful stay. We loved every minute of it. The changing moods of the mountain is amazing, making our early morning cup of coffee and the evening bottle of red wine so special. Climbing a Karoo koppie again, brought back childhood memories of holidays in Canarvan, where our family farmed Merino sheep for generations. hope to be back soon. Dave and Sandi, October 2010.

What an incredible spot! We could have stayed forever…or at least until our food ran out. One of the best views from a couch (through a framed doorway) that we’ve come across. We’re leaving here refreshed and inspired. Nienke and Tom, September 2010
Colin en Bronwyn, Baie dankie dat ons hierdie baie rustig en moor deel van ons land dan sien en beleef. Julle plekkies is baie mooi. Shalk en Fransa, September 2010.
We don’t read poetry, but we do read books. We like to travel to far away nooks. Tis many a mile to the emerald Isle, but nothing compares to Bronwyn’s smile. See you again. Brain and Shirley. August, 2010
Colin and Bronwyn, Thank you for sharing this tranquil and peaceful heaven on Earth. And to the best companion we could have – Jock, who kept us save by sleeping on our stoep. We will be back. Lizelle and Diederick, July 2010.
We felt at home immediately on your farm, Colin and Bronwyn, with Jock adding the finishing touches! Were more than happy to relax and explore the beauty of your valley. Running near your mighty mountains was awesome. We’d love to visit again, with our children and grandchildren. Bruce and Gill, July 2010.
A great stay, unfortunately too short. We will have to come back and rediscover the peace and beauty, not found in city life. The weather was beautiful, so much so that I had to climb the koppie in the morning accompanied by little Jock, who showed me the way. Thanks you for a lovely evening. Heiko, June 2010.
A place with heart, where dreams can become true. Thank you. Susan and Paul, June 2010.
Our tale started with a starry night spread across three canvasses – a prphesy of things to come. gazing at the majestic grandeur of the payne’s grey night last night – our souls fused and danced and celebrated. We were wind blown, awe struck, recharged, inspired, refueled. Thank you! Andre and Carla, June 2010.
Thank you for sharing your magnificent place. We will be back. Pippa and Vic, June 2010.
We swam! Yes it was freezing, but we came all this way and couldn’t let it pass. Bronwyn, Colin thank you for your warm welcome and sharing of this gem. We will be back! Magnus and Ciska, June 2010.
Superb! Van Riets, June 2010.
Your place is absolutely fantastic – accommodation and views! We will be back! Danie and Martie, June 2010.
What tranquility. What views. And snow on the peaks was a bonus. The small but powerful library was an extra special bonus. Rustum and Hetta, June 2010.
We had a wonderful time – accommodation is excellent and Port Festival was fun. Thought I was going to be extremely cold so loaded up on warm things but wasn’t necessary – well done, you cater for all. Thanks for everything. Johan and Manon, May 2010.
Colin en Bronwyn, hoe se ‘n mens dankie!? Dit is net ongelooflike huisies hierdie en dan om nie eers te praat van hoe tuis julle ons laat voel het nie. Walter, Marisa, Kara en Ouma Rossie, May 2010.
A day at matjiesvlei: Opening our eye-balls we said hello to the mountain range :Hello mountains!” Jock was springing about on the porch calling us to join him in the morning breeze. Lovely. We headed towards the canoe, Jock said the conditions were just right. We paddled off and it was clear Jock was furious he was left on the raft. And so Jock leapt into the river and onto our trail. We greeted the dassies and paddled on, spotting the Fish Eagle pair. We even caught a glimpse of a sly mongoose. Jock boarded the canoe after swimming 200m, he seemed as though he needed a break. We jumped into the river – a bit chilly for humans! It was midday and a stroll was in order, to see the pigs! Unfortunately it was their siesta and so they were all resting their bones in the cool shade and soothing mud. They were friendly and we had a light discussion with a brown pig who was drinking some fresh mountain spring water. We strolled on, up the road into the little crannies of the Karoo. We returned to snack by the river and relax! We even spotted a small snake. And so we bid farewell to the sheep, the cows, the birds, the fish, the snake and the sly mongoose. We especially bid farewell to Jock – what a lovely hound who made us feel so welcome! Thank you Bronwyn and Colin. Jane and Michael, April 2010.
Dear Bronwyn and Colin, As I walked through the front door of the Western River View Cottage I was even more sorry that I wasn’t with you to share my first viewing of all your effort with you. I can best sum it up rather inadequately in one word: Wow! Many travels, many places in the Karoos, but this really is something. Of course its charm (and many good books including Raymond Carver) scuppered my plans for a weekend of uninterrupted work on my laptop…I guess that says it all. ‘Sudden the desert changes, the raw glare softens and clings, till the aching Oudtshoorn ranges, stand up like the thrones of Kings’. Rudyard Kipling Derek, April 2010
Thank you for building these cottages that enable us to share your little piece of paradise. We loved everything from the quiet to the birds to the tastefully decorated interior. We will definitely be back. Pippa and Vic, April 2010.
We enjoyed our stay, thank you so much for your hospitality! If possible we would definitely return. Arno and Penny, April 2010.
By my arrival, I started to enjoy myself. Thanks for the hospitality. It was a pleasure to meet you. Peet, April 2010.
Feel this love, pulling like a river. Drink dawn, like a cup of spring water. Take in sunset, like supper. Close the language door. Open the love-window. The moon won’t use the door, only the window. Rumi (abridged). Gratitude to you, Colin and Bronwyn and family. I feel renewed and peaceful, and inspired by the beauty and friendship. Until next meeting. Harold, April 2010.
“A brother came and stayed with a certain solitary and when he was leaving he said: Forgive me Father, for I have broken in upon your Rule. But the hermit replied, saying: My Rule is to receive you with hospitality and let you go in peace”. (Verba Seniorum). I was received with generous hospitality. I left with deep peace. Blessings. Simon, March 2010
You are lucky to live in an extremely special valley. We misbehaved terribly (sorry) but we thoroughly enjoyed our short overnight stay. Your cottages are great and very well done. Congrats. If we are allowed to return, it will have to be for longer. Best wishes for the future of your cottages. Lynne and Alastair, March 2010.
We have been together for 60 years, 54 of marraige. Been all over SA and the world. Protea and Fynbos cultivated export farmers. Love everything about life and loved your place (in spite of the heat! Shoo!). Fortunately brought our own fan along. We have cottages on our farm on top of the mountain at Porterville, come and visit us. We just loved Jock. He is a dear little dog, polite and unobtrusive…I loved your books. Read Nietzsche, Justin Cohen and Richard Dawkins. Nietzsche is a rather unhappy chappy. Your chalets are truly lovely and the views of the river superb. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay with you. Denis and Alleysia, March 2010
Two roads diverged in the woods, and I took the one less travelled by, and that has made all the difference. Robert, February 2010
Baie dankie – om het ‘n draai gemaak op ons lewenspad – was voedsel vir ons siele en petrol in die tenk! Esme, Febraury 2010
Too short – must come back, soon! A special place to really ‘taste’ the Klein Karoo. A reminder that the “simple things in life” are really the most important. Well done on realising your dream – hope to catch up soon and hear the full story – Many thanks. Naomi and Darryl, February 2010
Thank you, thank you for a really fantastic weekend. There is so much to enjoy and equally wonder to do absolutely nothing! Thank you for making us feel so welcome. Till next time… Steven and Mandy, February 2010
Once again, a real treat to spend the weekend in the valley with the four of you. The cottages are magic and the view from the bedroom is magnificent. Gillian and Van, 1 January 2010.
A significant. A clean page. A new start, harnassing ‘the now’. Reflections of the year gone by – A tranquil, beautiful, awesome place to rest the soul and clear ‘psychological pollution’. A place to be quiet and dream. Simple abundance! Paula, 1 January 2010.
We had a wonderful time. Fresh air, tick. Fantastic water, tick. Canoe, tick. Braai, tick. Walk, tick. David and Bridget, 3 January 2010.
Momentos. Fantasticos. Mergulho no Rio. Jantar a luzdevelas. Bebendo vinho Olhamdoestrelos. Pereita Noite de Amor na Africa. Obrigada Senov! Karina, 25 January 2010.
The call of the hadedas in flight, the cry of the fish eagle, a winding road to comfy cottages overlooking a river that gives life to the green valley, in stark contrast to the Karoo bush. A friendly family, who soon become friends. Little Jock, with a welcoming wag, and regal Lawrence, walking alongside………These are some of the ingredients which blend together to make food for the soul! We’ll be back. Eddie and Lyn, 29 January 2010.
If heaven were a place on Earth,it would be a place like this. Where sheep converse with cows across the valley. Where the sun melts the coldest of hearts and the river plumps up the weakest of spirits. Where there’s like in every square inch. Where there’s not enough film in your roll. Where the world twinkles upside down at night. Where sleep is gift wrapped. Where lovers fall deeper in love, and the dreamers meet their dreams. Natalie, December 2009.
Thanks for letting us restore faith and spirit. You are inspirational. Jurgen, 27-30 December 2009.
Your dramatic and majestic mountain range has seduced me. our short stay in your valley offered time for reflection an for regaining inner tranquility. Thank you for this. Debbie, December 2009.
